Pretty much the same at lower depths but a larger screen is easier to read. Its when you want to go deeper is where the 588 comes into its own. A 1kw should get you to over 500m. My mates boat runs an older 620 with a p66 tranny and we can read up to 200m on low frequency ok but its not great. But we can also read 50m at 30 knots.

628 takes a 600w tranny. 588 takes a 1kw. Thats the main diff. But yeah 588 obv bigger screen too.

Smaller
Is just a smaller unit that puts out 600w of power versus 1kw for the 588.
They will both work on the same transuders.
628 will work fine in that depth with the standard p66 transducer.
The bigger screen is easier to see if you can afford it
