I have wondered the same
I have wondered the same thing. my understanding is that it is a real time showing of the echo which is then transferred onto the screen as history. I think what that means is that you have to be actually looking at the screen to see it register the echo. I haven't used it so this is from my readings not experience.

I dont, and not sure what youd use it for but Randells understanding is correct.
THe Lowrance has same thing but round, ditto
