Finally Five Fathom
Submitted by Browndog on Sun, 2014-10-05 14:20
Hi all. Finally had some success out on the five fathom yesterday. First Dhuie in metro waters, plus a pair of black arse and a foxfish. Conditions were incredible, so we moved around a bit. Highlight of the day had to be looking over the side in 8m of crystal clear water and seeing the dhuie, then dropping an unweighted mulie past it's nose and watching it get smashed! Sight fishing dhuie's in 8m of water, does it get any better?
Cracking day out with good mate, and brought home a good feed to top it off.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers,
BD.

Cheers Chris, yes, it was pretty tasty last night along with a cold ale or three, but hard to go past BBQ dhu at the Abrolhos, so have to rate it second best!
Looking forward to my next session, but will most likely have to be after the ban. Still chasing the elusive sized pink.

Cheers Beau, now just gotta get the tailor dialled in like you. Had a couple of hook ups trolling past the reefs but they threw the trebles, should have switched to singles. Also had a sambo chase and play with our livie herring at the the back of the boat, but something spooked it and it left. YTK had a look as well but no interest.
Weirdest thing of the day was spotting something floating in the water in the distance, so we went over for a look. At first we thought it was a bird, then a shark fin, then it became clear it was a seal, on it's side, with one flipper held straight up out of the water. We thought it was dead until we got right next to it, and it seemed to be looking at a nice lump underneath it. Couldn't work out what was going on with the flipper in the air, but it had obviously been up for a while as it was completely dry. We left it after a couple of minutes, still with the flipper held high, no idea what was going on there...

Well done mate, I know you've
Well done mate, I know you've followed my posts for a while so its good to see a sik report from yourself! Cant believe a sambo or a ytk would turn down a livie they must be well fed out there haha! Lets tee something up for a tailor sesh, its a great option during the ban. the last month or so has been the thickest I have ever seen the tailor, schooling in the hundreds, plus throw in a handful of salmon and all on surface lures it makes for a great session.
Shoot me a pm if you're interested

Keen
Keen as, PM sent.
Yeah I was amazed the Sambo didn't take the herring, it chased it around for a few moments, and at one stage I swear it had it, but then lost interest and swam away (we may have spooked it as my mate and I were both standing on the transom watching it from about ten feet away, waiting for the fun to start!) When we pulled the livie in there were no bite marks or anything so it must have just missed it. Poor little hezza must have been crapping itself. The YTK swam around a bit but wasn't interested in a livie, a whole squid or a whole mulie, so yeah, must have been well fed!
Talk soon.

Mate thats called Sailing
Its a way off cooling themselves.
'Keeping Cool' - Thermoregulation:
Fur Seals often need to cool down, as their coats are so effective at heat insulation. They do this by 'sailing'. The seal's hairless flippers have a lot of blood vessels running through them. One flipper can be held out of the water so the wind passes over its surface. The evaporation of the water from the wet flipper cools the flipper and the blood flowing through it. Seals do this when they need to regulate their body temperature. It is called "thermoregulation".
Edit: it applies to not just fur seals but sealions etc

Dhuey out and about in that depth during the day is one thing, but spotting it and feedin it a bait and hookin up is something else! Nice one BD, what are those foxfish like on the xhew? Never caught one

Thanks
Thanks Tim-o, was blown away by sight fishing the Dhu. Foxfish came up OK, but on the fillet we cooked that night we left the skin on (I love the skin on the dhuies when it goes all crispy) but the foxfish is more of a slimy skin, when cooked it goes all rubbery, they definitely need the skin removing. Flavour wasn't bad, but I don't reckon it's a patch on the Dhu. Next one will probably go back to swim another day, as from what I've seen on here they are really slow growing. My mate has the rest of the fillets so will ask him how it goes skinned.
BTW, congrats on the Pink, I'm still working on that one for metro waters, loads of 40cm models just nothing bigger
Cheers,
BD.
