Finally imported a boat !!

Hi Everyone

After over a year or researching and talking to people i bit the bullet and went ahead with importing a 2007 2052WA with 68hrs on the motor, Lewmar profish1000 winch , Garmin sounder, shore power etc etc.

Firstly it was a private boat through a broker of Newportboats who were amazing.

I had it mechanically and structurally surveyed by two independent surveyors in the US. They provided me with Computer printouts, engine diagnostics, compression tests , high resolution photos valuations etc etc.

I had the boat dropped of at West Coast trailers where they fitted the hydrastar electric override brakes, breakaway unit and Aust standard hitch and chains ($1500)

I then had it picked up by Portsea marine it was cleaned, packed and shrink wrapped and dropped in Fremantle via ro-ro transport. This included help with the Dotars and import permit. ($10,500)

Once in Fremantle i had to pay the GST and Quarantine ($3800)

To tow it off the port i needed a friend with MSIC card because they could not organise a escort for me quick enough.

I had the HIN Validated and registered with marine safety 2 days later.

I re-wired the trailer with amber lights, License plate light and side clearance markers. and did a few minor adjustments to comply with ADR Specs. I had the trailer weighted at a weight bridge and the VIN Number and trailer stamped with tare weight and all associated details.

It went over the pits first time with no worries.

Total Cost $43,000

Everything came as expected the boat and motor are in perfect condition and everything stated was with the boat.

The only problem i had with all off this is that because the boat and trailer where on the same bill of sale the DPI wanted to charge me stamp duty on the whole boat cost which was sorted out fairly quickly. From start to finish the whole process only took 2 months. First thing i did was drain all the fuel ( even though there not suppose to ship with fuel) and have a full service done including al new oils, lubes imepllors and filters. Shes been out on the water 3 times now and i really like the ride and handling. I can't wait to do a few more tweaks e.g Raymarine e97.

So at the end off it all did i get a good buy? I think so it was a lot of hard work and i may not have saved much money but it was a great experience. Few pics of ther new rig!

Cheers,

Vinnie

Hi so Im tossing up the idea of importing a boat in

Im looking at the Trophy 2352 as it looks near on perfect for what I need

so as I take it apart that the cost of getting the boat over here was about 15g?

Gday Brad  Yes that is

Wed, 2012-09-19 20:17

Gday Brad

Yes that is roughly the cost, a 2352 would be a few k more in shipping though. Depends what you want to spend there is a 23 and a 25 for sale on this site, Piggys is about 70k i think ?

Be very careful a lot of boats over there look good but really are not. Before you proceed with anything make sure you get NEW HD photos of the boat including the hull, bilge motor fishwells etc. Look for scratches and cracks. Make sure you verify the engine hours and compression etc etc.

Costs

Thu, 2012-09-20 10:37

Bradlze,

My boat is a 25 foot and it cost me $9900 for shipping and roughly $4600 for GST and wharf fees!! 2352 Would be a little cheaper but not a hell of a lot!

P.S Probibly not going to sell it anymore, having too much fun with it!!

Cheers

Shipping

Sun, 2012-11-18 22:02

$9,900 for a 25' boat, it's costing me $14,900 for a 25' CC boat (LOA 27'). Where did you ship yours out of? Wondering why the $5K difference. Were there any other hidden charges other than the GST you had to pay once the boat go here? I've allowed another $1,200 for port fees.

Hey guys,

Mine was a private sale, but I had a broker in New South Whales have his contact inpect the boat before the money was handed over.

I had mine sent RORO. If you have it on a trailer it is definently the way to go!

Vin,

I paid some bloke who was organised through the transport company $150 to get it from the warf... I had a guy who came to freo where I picked up the boat and he completed the hull identification number paper work for $110... I then hooked up the boat and drove to the license centre and got the boat licensed the same day!!

As for the trailer it took me about a week to put electric over hydraulic brakes, re-wire everything and istalled lights, reflectors ect, shorten the width, change tow hitch. Then I took it to a mate who does trailer inspections and got it all approved, drove to licensing centre again and had the trailer licensed!!

The hardest part was shortening the width, I ended up getting early model hilux 6 stud tyres which had a zero offset put them on and cut down the guards down... I had to shorten the width 45mm each side and with doing what I did I baught it in about 53mm each side so I pissed it in!!

Did you get yours all licensed and everything pretty easy?

I've got a Boston Whaler 255 Conquest coming from the US at the moment. It will be here (Freo Port) within the next few weeks and I was planning to pick it up myself from the Wharf when it arrives. Is there any documentation the Wharf asked you for before they would let you drive away with it. Specifically, do they check your Car capacity for towing etc, or do they take it on face value that you have done all your paperwork for towing and insurance and oversize permits etc. FYI - It's on an Austrlaian compliant trailer (purpose built), but still needs to be licenced. I was planning to just organise before hand a day licence to cover Insurance, oversize towing etc ... just so I can tow it to the licencing centre.

Actually there is your first problem.

You won't be allowed to drive it off the wharf, you're not allowed on there without the right credentials (misc or something?).

You probably need a temp permit from the as well to move it without it being registered too; http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/20779.asp

Anyone without a MSIC can be escorted by someone who holds a MSIC so if you have a mate with the card they can go with you to pick up the boat

Wed, 2012-11-21 18:34

Yes you need a MSIC card to get onto the wharf other wise you can try and organise a escort but its a pain in the ass. I had a mate escort me with his MSIC and it was all good. They should have all the documentation that they need to release it to you, just with photo ID. But that's as long as you have a import permit and AQIS clearance ?

They could not care less with what or how you tow it, lights working not working etc etc. I had everything correct, just re wired the plug to suit my car on the wharf. Be aware the standard 7 pin round in USA is 7 Pin round large.

On the other hand DPI certainly does and are very thorough so be careful with the licensing.I assume your tow weight is over to be asking a question like that ?

If you plan on towing your boat straight to DPI be careful because even though they say it is compliant there are quite a few little hidden things that might not be done.

Cheers.

Tue, 2012-11-27 15:25

Hey Vinnie,

Question - When your boat arrived at fremantle port, how long did it take to clear customs before you could pick it up from the wharf. Are we talking 1 or 2 days or more? And do they call you ... what is the arrangement? Any update would be great. Luckily I managed to find a mate with a misc licence ... so i just need to give him some notice when the ship arrived at port.

Cheers

Yeh snuffs i think it was about 2 days before my boat got inspected by AQIS and then i picked it up straight away. I think they do call you but i was calling them before they called me so i could be onto it straight away.

If you call them they can give you a time that your inspection will be and it does not take very long.

Hi guys,

Just for future reference, I hold a current MSIC and if anyone needs a hand getting anything off the wharf, just let me know. I might not have a vehicle big enough to tow the boat for long distances but could always just tow it off the wharf and out the gate and you can take it from there.
