Finals Are Here
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Thu, 2017-09-07 13:10
I'm going to preface this thread by stating I am heading down South tomorrow and will be on the boat or in breweries a lot so I won't be on here much and will probably watch the game down at Stiltz in Busso if I can get a table inside. If anyone can suggest another venue that will show the game besides the stinky Dunsborough Hotel please let me know.
Going to be a few large matches this weekend and I am tipping Radelaide, Sydney, Geelong and... wait for it.... West Coast. Going to be a big Saturday for me and I'm hoping I can tune into the WAFL semi down there.
Carn Eagles and you Black Ducks!

BJ suffers from the Tall
BJ suffers from the Tall Poppy syndrome, I'm guessing he's a Franklin hater also....
For me, i wasted so many tips throughout the year thinking Geelong arent as good as they are ( were )....
For me they fall away too much after about their top 10 players....
Lets face it if you are playing an 18 yr old string bean like Zac Guthrie you dont bat too deep....
I am suprised Menzel missed out for Guthrie!
Murdoch
Parsons
Motlop
Partiff
Bews etc etc are not what i would call reliable players you need in a final....
Funny thing is I think Richmond are kinda in the same boat but they are certainly riding the roller coaster.
I think it is stiff for Geelong they had to play in front of that crowd and i think that afftected the umpires somewhat...
Pretty safe to say Richmond will now play in the granny, I'm hoping its against the team thats been the best all year...

As usual there was a lot to be critical of in regards to turnovers and delivery to the forwards etc, but the way they kept coming back when looking beaten a couple of times was good to see.

What can I say? My man crush on Shuey just went into full blown stalker mode last night.
If Dermie wants to replay free kicks and bad umpire review calls he has a 4 quarters and 2x overtime full of decisions where Port got the rub of the green.
What a day. Mrs collapes in the bathroom and goes completely blind for 5 mins, can't get 000 coz of mobile reception, 4am mercy dash to emergency and 6 hours of tests and a win in overtime after the siren.
Followed up with a successful dhu bash outa Busso today surrounded by breaching whales.

Fuck you know your pissed
Fuck you know your pissed when you start bararacking for the Eagles...
I would agree with you that perhaps some free kicks went the way of the home team but IMO thats all part of the advantage of the home game, I'd say Adelaide had a few that went their way and even though it was supposed to be a Geelong home game, the 75000 Richmond supporters also created an atmosphere where the Umps seemed to lean in a way that also favoured them...
As a neutral supporter last night i didnt care who won but again IMO a great game decided by the umpire is fucked, it wasn't a high tackle until Shuey made it so...
Its a blight on the game and the sooner the umps get rid of it the better for it we'll all be....

The only way to prevent it is to tackle to the waist. The reason tacklers don't do this more often is because the ball carriers arms are now free to handball and keep the ball moving, so I think if you tackle around the arms and you end up around their neck, suck it up, its a free kick.

Nope disagree.... The ball
Nope disagree....
The ball carriers prime objective when tackled should be to not get caught holding the ball, His first reaction should be to try and drop it on his boot or handball it. What Luke Shueys does/did was to raise the arm and change a fair tackle to one that looks high.
Fortunately there are only a few of these type players in the league with the biggest culprits being Lyndsay Thomas, Luke Shuey and Joel Selwood.
Go back to the basics of why you have a rule like a high tackle, its to protect the ball carriers head. If the ball carrier wants to water down that rule and initiate high contact then the umps should not award the cheat with a free kick.
Are you in favour of a player diving forward in a marking contest when he feels any body contact from behind? Of course you are not because its a shit look for the game and again thats not why the in the back rule is in our game. If you are a fan of Soccer then perhaps staging doesn't faze you but it pisses me off no end.
I'd love to see/hear the reaction of the Eagles supporters if Lyndsay Thomas had done it in the exact same circumstances at Subi to knock the Eagles out of a final they were about to win.
I dont necassarily blame Shuey, He's got away with it this long he knows no different. The AFL has a lot to answer for regarding some of the interpretations of some of the rules.

And LC, you state the only way to change it is to tackle at the waist??
No the only way to change it is to call them out and not award them... Stop awarding the free kicks to Selwood this way and he'll stop trying to initiate the high contact and he wont be the highest free kick for each and every year like he is now...
A high tackle should be one that is deemed dangerous or potentially dangerous ABOVE the shoulders!

Disagree
The same interpretation should be applied for tripping then. If I tackle someone above the knees...they try to run away, the tackle falls and get tripped, should it still be a trip? By your logic it should not be a trip.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Bradz I totally agree, a trip should be a blatant trip....
Running behing and clipping the ankles or ankle tapping them on the ground.
IMO if two players are on the ground and one gets up to try n run and the other tackles him around the ankles and as a result he goes arse up well its a tackle isn't it, NOT A TRIP....
In the back should be a PUSH in the back, in the back shouldn't be a tackle that ends up in the back as there is no danger there....
I could keep going but it pisses me off thinking about how complicated the rules are and where we are heading!!

Dale my take on the Mckenzie
Dale my take on the Mckenzie thing....
Couple of things to think of, Everyone seems to be talking about what an effort it was of him but no one has mentioned he totally missed a mark that as a defender in that situation he should have had his name all over, He's just a very lucky boy he wasn't a metre or two closer otherwise we'd all be talking about how he lost them the game...
As far as the out of bounds thing goes no i dont think it was deserving of a free kick to Port even though it certainly was deliberately taken towards the post/out of bounds...
It makes no sense i know but thats part of the grey area of that rule, he as a defender has no choice does he?
To me that wouldn't be within the spirit of the game....
They haven't got the deliberate out of bounds rule sorted as yet, perhaps there will be something that in the future the rule doesn't apply in your defending 50mtr arc??

To continue down the
To continue down the adjudication of the game road, I think the game is way over umpired. Yes i hear the stories its the hardest game in the world to adjudicate and i get that but if you create a rule book with as many murky interpretations as the current AFL has each game then you are asking for trouble.
Perhaps thats all part of the business plan of the AFL, to get people talking about it regardless...
Trip, chopping of the arm, in the back, holding the man ( seriously if a bloke has got a jumper by half a finger nail is that affecting his opponent in anyway!?!? Play on!?!?) Dragging the ball in ( there was a shocker in the Port/WC game where i think it was Yeo that dragged the ball under the port bloke who ended up laying on the ball with his back with both arms in the air while Yeo held the ball under him and was penalised ) Too high, deliberate, blah blah - the list is long...
If they didnt blow their whistle at half of these type of free kicks then the game would run itself a lot more then the umps can ensure they dont miss the big ones....

True.
Very true Jack,
And if they can play out the four quarters & more importantly score in all four quarters they are in with a big shot.
The one let down for them lately is being unable to score in one quarter, but this is finals and defence alone may not be enough.
Like you said, they are in the finals with only 5 other teams left.
Not bad odds, especially when you are the written off "underdog".
Hope they go a lil bit further.
Cheers & Stay safe
