Finding a Career

Firstly- there are heaps of good blokes on here and thanks for your time for reading this and your responses.

I'm 28 and sort of freaking out that i need to learn some new skills before i get to old. I have been working as a forkie/storeman for the last 7 years although the place i work at now pays well it's just permanent casual and the hours are up and down. I need to find a career! I possibly did the worst trade in the world when i was younger- Baker- Shit pay, shit hours. I would love to do another apprenticeship but I don't know if i can afford too after paying rent, child support, bills etc(it cost me 650-700 a week just to live).  I am mechanically minded and am not afraid of hard work and love a challenge. I'm not crazy about FIFO at the moment as my son is 2 and I don't want to miss out on things but would be interesed in doing something that leads to it. My cousin is trying to get a traineeship as a linesman with western power which sounds OK. I'm not expecting to walk into a sweet job and would be willing to tough it out money wise for a while.

So I ask... What could I do?

Thanks heaps, The Dude

Man Ive got a few family

Man Ive got a few family members in the exact same position - and the FIFO decision is hard because the money is enticing but like you said you're inevitably gonna miss stuff.
What I suggest for the mean time while you decide on something is just get onto seek and see if anything tickles your fancy - whether it be temporary. Maybe you could hold down a few casual positions until something more permanant you might enjoy comes along?
At 28, despite what you think, you have time for anything man. I know people who have become commercial pilots from scratch at that age.

If you love the ocean which you prob do being a FW member. Then I would suggest looking at becoming a deckhand, but dont just look at commercial fishing, there are plenty of opportunities on charter boats and ferry's etc. I started on charter boats when I left school got some seatime then moved on to bigger boats I'm now on an offshore support vessels doing FIFO and earning some good coin, once you get a bit of seatime and some experience the opportunities are endless in WA

Boddington isn't BHP - it's Newmont. Try Orica Mining Services, they are one of the very few that take on green staff and train them

Newmont have the big gold mine there as well.

Tickets

Fri, 2012-10-26 13:05

As said above get some tickets, if you can't become a professional ie. education backed career, you need to have something to separate you from the unskilled labour workers of which there is an endless supply.

Hard labour jobs in mining are great when your in your 30's but when you get a bit older, suddenly 12 hour shifts don't seem so easy.
