Fined

I have a 10ft tinny that I use with a 30 lb thrust electric tiller steer motor. I have had it for years and it get's a lot of use and never bothered to license it as I thought it wasn't required. Anyway the fisheries came alongside for a chat the other day and asked a few questions and took all my details and at the time even they weren't sure if it needed to be licensed. Now three weeks later I get a phone call to inform me that I am going to be fined $160 because any powered craft needs to be licensed they eventually decided. Just wondering how my tiny tinny differs from a yak with a leccy and what others thoughts are on the matter.

I think you may find that it
I think you may find that it applies to Yaks as well. I believe any motorised vessel needs to be registered.
Someone with more time will read the regs and set the record straight.

Yeah, we’ve had a discussion
Yeah, we’ve had a discussion about it a while ago here http://fishwrecked.com/forum/electric-motor-boat-rego-licensing. The link doesn’t work anymore. This is a new one http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/recreational-boat-registration.asp
As much as I find it stupid, it looks like you need to have your boat registered. There should be an exemption for anything under 6hp as in some other states.
However I am not sure, if fisheries can fine you. It should be job for water police?

Fair enough
Thanks for the links Likc. Rules are rules I suppose but for just a small leccy motor I think it's a bit rough.

For a while...
...fisheries and DoT officers were working together/going on each others' boats...so it was possible to get checked for both fishing related stuff and safety gear/skippers ticket at the same time. Not sure if they're still doing that, but.
Common sense would say that if less than 6hp requires no skippers ticket, that should be the cutoff for rego as well.

Come now, don't be silly...
Come now, don't be silly... think of all the coin they'd miss out on with people double registering (tender and boat)
Officially off the Pies bandwagon
