Hi guys, my Merc motor is playing up so I'm looking at options for a new motor. Are Yamaha 4 stroke a good option?
cheers

One word Brilliant
just shy of one nautical mile a litre ......that is a 225 on a 6.8 seaqest with two people and all the dive gear aboard .
and that is pretty much at any speed over 20 knots, drops off slightly at around 27 knots to 0.9 NM a litre .....cannot complain about that

Got a 300 on mine and hasn't missed a beat. 340 hours now but only about 120 put on by me. Often forget to turn it off when drifting due to quietness. About 1km/l on a 7.5m westerberg

1600hrs
On my 115, and runs like new. Average around 1.8-2 kms per litre on my 6m aly. Service boats up north runnin yammys are doin 3000 plus before repower and the donks are sold to be used again
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

thats quite true Tim-o,
thats quite true Tim-o, though a fairly common theme is gearbox failure around the 2000hr mark.

Always in the workshop getting sorted out..pieces of shit they are refered to..only last for 300 to 500 hours if you can put up with them for that long..it is E-Tec we are talking about isn't it ???

1500hrs on my 2008 model
1500hrs on my 2008 model 250hp 4st Simo, not a single issue, Ive done all of the servicing once it hit 300 hrs as well. Old Golden Spanners wanted $1200 a service here in sunny Karratha, so I do it myself - only costs $300-$400 depending if you do the thermostats and anodes as well as some Export cans.

Personally I would rather a little too much power than too little mate, you can always keep some in the bank for if you ever need it, 100 would prob be ok but I would go the 115 IMO

The Price jump from a 100 to the new 115 yammie is pretty big. Youll get 32 knots out of the 100. Thats fast enough in a traily. I priced the 2 yammie up not long ago.Your tub will be fine with the 100.
Your cutting it fine getting a change over in a week then running it in before your trip.

5.5
I had a 5.5 ali with 100 yammy, did about 33 knots on the calm days but mostly couldn't use all the horsepower that often. I think it was fine, We could pull up single skiers without problem.
If money wasn't an issue, id go 115 because I rarely hear people say "dam, I have too much power".

Re running in prior to the
Re running in prior to the trip - had the same issue when I got mine - took it out for two runs of around 1 hour each before the trip just to get a couple hours on it.
Run in as per manual for first two hours and then you will be right after that to run normally as long as you
- vary the revs (rather than constant running on same revs)
- don't run WOT for more than 10 or so seconds (just to make sure it's propped/fitted right and getting in max rev range).
Cheers
