First bait free trip
With the weather looking mint for sunday I am thinking of trying my first bait free dhu session. Thing is folks, Im feeling very anxious about not taking some form of bait and my knowledge of jigging is one step above f##k all. My best succes with placys has come from leaving the rod in the holder while rolling a champion or cracking a brew and then hooking up to fish without twiching, yanking, freespooling, etc. I am really keen to give it a go and I have reliable ground that I know produces when using bait but I need to break the ice. Would appreciate if any of you guys can give me any tips/techniques/gear I need etc? I have a rough idea about weight of jigs in relation to depth. I mostly fish depths from 30 to 45m. Would appreciate any advice or even storys about breaking away from bait. At the end of the day I think Im just paranoid about not brinnging home a feed.

That is the best way to
That is the best way to learn how to use jigs! In the morning if you go out just as the sun is rising use a lumo jig, when the sun comes up a fair bit then use a different colour, dhuys are obsoluletly loving the orange!
Do real soft lifts and only up like half a meter, ever lift just crank 1/4 to 1/4 a turn every time, get if up 10/15 meters and then do a massive lift high in the air sending the jig flying up, then quickly free spool it so it flutters down to the bottom, the flutter is what you want, often get hit as soon as it hits the ground or a few meters up. If you have a couple people on board, have different colors and styles till you see what is working, if you have enough space, drop a Octo jig down and pull it 2 meters off the bottom to stop getting snags then just leave it and let the boat rock work it, good way to have a second chance to get a feed

Cheers Troy. Do you really
Cheers Troy. Do you really jig 10/15m off the bottom? I have hooked dhu in 40m after winding up at least 20m to check bait.

If your targeting demersals
If your targeting demersals you definitely want your lure close to the bottom. The fish will come out of its nook and chew the lure. Definitely take a wide variety of lures/colours! When you get fed up of not catching anything you want a bunch of stuff to choose from. When you buy lures, have a logical reason for purpose eg "I like the size and the paddle tail works in a slow drift, or this will look good on that jig head I'm not sure why I bought". IMO you are taking bait... The stupid fish you catch with your lures make good fresh bait!
