First catch on fly
Submitted by kane on Mon, 2010-08-23 21:18
Hi
Went down south with the family last week and managed to sneak a little time to practice fly fishing in the donnelly river, probably the smallest brown trout ever seen but hey, it was my first catch on fly so worth a quick photo
Also worth a comment is for such a small fish it smashed that fly hard, can see why trout fishing is such a hit with fish alot bigger, they have alot of go in them.
Goes without saying this one was released haha

(i've got to have a crack at it soon)
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

hahahaha
have to admit, wasnt really too optomistic at catching anything, was more of a casting practice excercise, so i guess someting is definately better than nothing :)

Good to see you got your first at least. Havent caught a trout yet (though havent tried).
What gear are you using there?
By the shape of the grip, i'm guessing that little trout didnt put too much of a bend in the rod :p. There do appear to be some big ones out there, so hopefully one of them will come along and enfulf the fly next time.

good pickup hlokk
its not a freshwater flyrod at all, its actually an 8 weight saltwater setup (far too heavy), winston boron rod van stall reel, couldnt justify the expense at the moment of a dedicated freshwater setup for the very few times ill ever fish freshwater.
and your right very little rod bend encountered haha

Yeah, not many FW rods with
Yeah, not many FW rods with a full wels grip and a fighting butt, hehe. Though I do have a bream/trout 5wt that does have a fighting butt.
Hopefully you'll be able to get some saltwater species on it soon.
However, there are some certain areas of WA that where the trout would put a big bend in that rods. Though, these trout are red with blue dots ;)

Well Done
Not a big fish but the first fw fish on fly is something you will remember. Dry fly or wet? Just looked at your profile as I often do prior to commenting on others posts and compliment you on the content. I encourage others to complete their profiles. I think it's useful to have some background of the person you may be responding to.

nice work mate, ive been fly fishing for about 3 years now i am still waiting for my first trout, so well done mate they do say that it is very hard to catch any thing so early on in fly fishing so well done. oh btw if you dont know there is a good little fly fishing shop in bayswater directly across from train station, its called fly world, he does casting lessons and is very in sightfull.

Good effort, freshwater fish
Good effort, freshwater fish are much harder to catch on fly. I cut my teeth on flathead, flounder and herring in the river.

thanks for the encouragement guys
looking forward to doing some saltwater fly fishing when the opportunity arises, reckon catching a salmon, dolphinfish or tuna on fly would be brilliant :)

something is better then
something is better then nothing especially when its something you dont expect to take the bait, fly or lure, at least you know yourfly presentation is spot on, good luck on the saltwater fly fishing i reckon a hard running fish will blow your socks off and get you even more bitten by the bug hahah.
