First D Bash of the Season

Between bad weather, weekend family events and working through Xmas I haven't had a chance to chase demersals since the last day before the ban. Been planning a trip out with my brother in law who's just moved back to Perth but the weather's had our measure.
Messaged him Thursday saying we're on for Sat with a 2 hour window so take ya concrete pills coz were heading out into the chop and coming home in the chop. Plan was to fish for bait inside if it was still too rough but one look out of the marina and we were off to my spot in the 30s where you can just about smell the chips in the marina.
First drop we reefed up two big Sgt Bakers and an undersized pinky so we knew it was on. We could feel the finicky dhus down there kissing the baits so letting out line and waiting to strike was the name of the game and I hooked what I thought was a small dhu to pull up a nice size Blackarse.
We both hooked and dropped something solid and then the BIL was on and pulling up his first metro dhu that went 55cm.
Then it was my turn and this dhu was giving me some curry on my PE2 rod and had him pegged at around 55cm+ only to measure 46cm. He went hard for a little tacker.
Caught another few undersized dhus, a foxfish, a Sgt Baker and scorpion fish but the wind wasn't getting any more comfortable and the bite was going off so we headed in for a pint content with a feed.

nicely done... interesting
nicely done...
interesting what u say about the dhus being finicky... I never really considered that and always put down the other bites as wrasse etc.... will try the trick of letting out line and being a bit more patient next time...

Probably should mention I was using snelled offset circles on a drift bait rig too so I wanted to make sure they had it before I took up the slack to hook them even changed rods to my lighter combo to let them load it up a bit more. Except for the size dhu all the undersizies caught were all on the bottom snelled hook and through the top of the lip which says to me they were quite tentative… well that’s my excuse for dropping the big boys and we all need a book of excuses.

Got some nice fillets off the Blackarse too. Went down well with some ricotta and bacon stuffed mushrooms, shoestring chips and a 500ml can of Asahi.
Gotta teach the brother in law how to bleed a dhu though, he butchered those wings!
