First Shark but cracked rod!

Caught my first shark on tues night! Hopetoun jetty, Bronzie about 5ft. Caught it on a penn 850ssm and rovex aureus 12ft 6-15kg.

Problem is I cracked the rod! on the join there's a 4mm crack!

I'm thinking of getting a Penn 113 or 114 OH reel but want a rod that's got abit more grunt. Not sure what size I should get either. Something that won't crack! Would be cool to take it north for some monsters too.

Any recommendations?

Nice work mate! did you have a picture at all? I've been putting in the hours big time trying to land my first land based shark any tips that you picked up on while fishing for it? and what sort of rig and bait did you use?

P.s Sorry to hear about your rod, atleast it gives you an excuse to go buy yourself a new one :)

Cheers, I got the worst photo

Cheers, I got the worst photo possible on my Iphone in the dark so it's very hard to see.

We used herring with a few slices in it, Gamakatsu 8/0 Circle, 1m 200lb black multi strand, 1m 130lb leader, 30lb braid.

Ballooned it out from the rock jetty and waited a few hours. Actually took the bait as we decided to pack up and call it a night. Not much fight in it until it got close to the jetty then it went a little nuts. Awesome to see it under the water!

Berley was just mulies. There were quite a few people fishing off the boat jetty earlier though. Beginners luck I reckon!

Always need a new excuse to buy new kit! Reckon I'm addicted but haven't got a clue what I'm looking at!

Yeah thats fair enough always

Yeah thats fair enough always a bit harder at night when you have only got your phone on ya! i never think about bringing a proper camera down.

Funny you say that i used three different types of baits the other week on after 10 mins of the herring hitting the water had a massive run busted off though :( been finding it a bit hard to find decent amounts of herring. Do you have any tips on where to go for herring keen on getting some for bait, got loads of scalies in the fridge though dont know if there as good.

I use a similar kind of rig Size 9/0 hooks, 1.5 meters 150 lb trace my mistake was not using a leader so going to go 2 meter mono 200 lb and use 50 lb braid.

Is that in rocko? it's always the case something happens just as your about to call it a night! i bet could imagine the excitement.

seemed like you did everything right and payed off :)

I know what ya mean there is that many different outfits on the market today! just depends what you will be using it for, that will determine the outfit that you go for.

if your stuck just go into a proper tackle store (Not BCF) one that is just based on fishing and ask them im sure they will be able to give you a hand

Metro are u based in Perth? I'm in Hopetoun so herring are in the local bait shop.

Doggy the crack is on the outer of the join of the rod. Shark went under the pier so i was pulling it out.
