First Squidding Experience

My nephew gave me a call and said I’ve got the day off tomorrow, let’s go squidding.  Why not I said squidding is something I have never tried before.  We met a Woodman Point at the gentleman’s hour of 9am and we were off in his recently purchased 3.9m dinghy powered by a 25hp Honda motor.  Not long after we stopped over what looked like some weedy ground and he produced the tackle of the day (two $40 Big W specials, purchased for his kids).  After the first drift we hadn’t had any action when we were approached by another boat that had been in the area (obviously a pinger I thought, he’s after our spot).  As he got real close he yelled out ‘are you guys after squid’, we nodded to which he responded ‘if you go in closer you will have more success’.  Well, cheeky blighter I thought, first pinging our secret squid spot and then trying to tell us where to go.

Anyway we heeded his advice and spent the next few hours catching squid and small cuttlefish (released) and getting inked.  We didn’t get our limit but plenty for a feed for both families and a few smaller ones kept for bait.  Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday.

Yeah, usually you have to tell the pingers where to go.   Good to see people out there still giving friendly advice.

Good to hear you got into some squid? First of many sessions perhaps?

Top result all round. Seems as though there are some decent people left in the world.

Good result......Pingers meh...He helped you out and did the right thing.

Generally i dont see how you could have a secret squidding spot just from woodies. Its well known area to drift over the weed patched between woodies and GI or GI. My "secret" squdding spot generally always has boats in the general area......if it was pinkies or dhues or wot not , yerh he was a spot theif, but squdding meh i highly doubt it.

we got 12 in just over an hour last night , some nice size tube but some mini ones for bait as well.

about him being a pinger and attempting to draw attention to the fact that there are still people out there that are genuinely helpful and not afraid to share.  The subtlety was obviously lost.
