Fish finder plotter and transducer
Hi All,
Im getting a 6m Alu boat built Scorpion from out Fremantle way, anyway Im wanting to work out what people think I should use Fish finder and plotter wise? I am planning on a seperate plotter from the FF/sounder to give myself a decent view of whats below. There are also a few options as far as the tranducer goes and some FF have what they claim is a system that offers even clearer view of whats below - for another $650 or so.
I will do a little fishing in about 20 - 30 meters going for Whitting close in at Lancelin but more out the back of Rotto and out back of Lancelin at around 60 m. I would appreciate peoples opinions on what they would choose allowing around 3k for the FF. If they can be purchased overseas/online as USA seems to have cheaper - well everything! and I am not in to much of a rush. ALso the technology e.g under hull, through hull, transome mount etc.
One other thing to consider at this stage is the plotter - I friend of mine mentioned a trolling motor he uses that can hold a point or follow structure which is something I may get at some stage so do I need to allow for this with a plotter I buy so it can control the trolling motor? Or maybe these electric motors actually come with their own plotter.
Thanks to anyone who comments and Im open for all suggestions
cheers
Dave

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Hey Jeff. How have you got
Hey Jeff. How have you got the chartplotter wired up? Is it connected to the tranny or somehow synced in with the Furuno. I'm looking for a new GPS and want to know the best way to go about configuring it all. Cheers Andy

If you go for a non-Furuno
If you go for a non-Furuno GPS with your sounder, you can at least send it GPS data to get locations.
There are at least a couple of threads about which wires you have to poke into where to get that happening ;)

Furuno talks both ways with
Furuno talks both ways with most plotters that have NMEA0183 compatibility. White(+)/blue(-) input & yellow(+)/green(-) output - For the 620 & 585
Set input data sentence to CGA and output sentence to TLL in the Sounder.......wala.
Can't fish for sh*t so don't get much chance to contribute, so if I can help like this then let me know.

Na Andy I don't have it connected

It depends on your budget.
It depends on your budget.
Do your investigations well before parting with your ca$h.
Things are about to change in the way fishfinders / headunits integrate/operate.
As a matter of fact it has already happened but in the upper end of the market.
This summers boat shows will be interesting when the new gear will be on show for every one to see and compare.
Most current fishfinders are a bit like points ignition and carburators still and the MPI upgrade is now here!

Hi glastro - I'd appreciate your advice on these , I'm considering all opinions and everybody has their own opinion so so far we have the ray marine 450 with chirp
Lawrance 10 with structure scan and the furno mentioned above - what would be your choice
Cheers for any suggestions you may have , don't really want to go over 5k for sounder and plotter weather combined or not

I would go the Lowrange 10.I
I would go the Lowrange 10.
I find the Furino just way to finiky and to difficult to use to be classed as anything close to user friendly.
But that is just me.

Dave,It is a Hobby and
Dave,
It is a Hobby and everyone has a limit of what they want to fork out.
This is the limiting factor in all cases.
Sadly in the first years of any new bit of kit, the prices are inflated, then they come down rapidly.
Ray Marine, Garmin and Simrad (Being Lowrange up market) are the ones I have narrowed down ( I work in electronics/instrumentation off shore, which might give me a little bit of an advantage in understanding it) .
The crux of the matter is the processing power of the main unit for the gear that you are connecting to it.
Ray Marine is sadly lagging behind in that regards.
But there are plenty of people who have all sorts of very expensive rods and reels + other kit to go fishing, that is their justifyed choice of enjoying their past time.
I rather spend it on boat & electronics, just a matter of personal choice.
