It took a 40gm pirate jig

It took a 40gm pirate jig almost its own size.  Bottom jaw protruded past its top jaw, distinctive dorsal fin, bulbous eyes and blue marking between the eyes.

 Lizard fish. Heaps of them

Mon, 2014-04-14 21:11

Lizard fish. Heaps of them in some areas. They are so agressive they will hit diving lures bigger than them. Not big enough to pull drag they just stop the lure from working properly.

Pinkbanded Grubfish

Tue, 2014-04-15 08:38

What a terrible photo for ID!  For my money, a lizard should have an obviously forked tail not just the extended filaments on the tail.

I think this is a Pinkbanded Grubfish Parapercis nebulosa.  It is common on trawling grounds across the NW, including Shark Bay.  Not often caught on a hook though.

Did it look like this?

Yes thats the one.  And my photographer wife says, "pfttt!"....  but I agree with you it was a terrible photo.    Thank you for the input.  I was always hopeful that in years to come I could catch a big fat coral trout near monkey mia....  alas maybe not.

Cheers.
