Fish of a lifetime!!!! Monster LB sambo
havent been on here for a while and i have a fair few reports to put up soon including a recent trip to NZ chasing Kingys at ranfurly banks
ill start with this sambo because i still cant wipe the smile off my face at what i achieved yesterday arvo back at home in albany!!
was fishing a common rock spot just out of town for sambos or kings and after trying to get a lively to slide out and not being able to i rigged up the light setup while i left the 2 80lb setups out without baits ready to. anyway first cast with the light gear (300m of 20lb braid on a 4000 catalina and majorcraft KG Evo 962HH rod) bait hit the bottom and tap tap BOOM!!! i was on in a big way, huge headshakes had me calling it for a very big sambo before 100m of line dissapeared in a flash, felt the line touch reef so i backed off as this beast pulled the other 200m of line through the reef and out goes the backing knot, with about 20m left it finnaly stopped and i had to gently fight the fish on 6kg mono with the line still rubbing on the reef, 40 minutes and a tense 200m later the line came free of the reef but it was chaffed all along it so i had to go very easy on it, another 10 minutes and this huge silver shine rose from the depths and broke the surface!!! MONSTER SAMBO!!!! as i was fishing on the ledge on my own it took another 20 minutes to cliff gaff it and when i tried to pull it up with the rope gaff i finally understood how big this fish actually was, draggged it up the top and my friend took some photos for me but as i had to rope down a face to the ledge she stayed up the top and watched it all.
this is a fish of a lifetime for me and im still shocked how i managed to pull this off!! not going to put up a weight but its 160cm long and 144cm fork and the biggest sambo ive ever seen in person. still cant wipe the smile off my face!!
always looking for a new challenge!!

Yeww that's a beauty. It's not only the fight but the line rubbing on the reef and the whole touch and go nature of it all that makes it such a memorable catch. Great work mate.

Cheers guysi think I could
Cheers guys
i think I could of hooked this fish 1000 other times and I would of lost it. Still have no idea how I didn't get dusted when it got me on the reef, was a good 10 minutes there where the line was solid snagged and wouldn't move, just had to be patient and waited for it to swim out and free the line a little bit. Then gaffing it solo was an entirely different challenge haha using a cliff gaff on my own while the fish is washing around in the surge and I could see damaged braid above my leader made it a very tense time.

My friend she stayed up the top at the car as she couldn't rope down to the ledge I was on so she could only watch as I fought and landed it solo and I brought it up top so I could get a photo.

we couldnt find scales heavy enough to weigh it so we had to cut it up and weigh pieces of it. i wont say what it went cause it causes arguments but its well over 70lbs of sambo on 20lb line
always looking for a new challenge!!

If you had of caught this on 130lb stand up off the stones I still would have said what a brilliant capture. To do it the way you did is just unbelievable. Might as well give up fishing now mate, you won't beat that...
