fishing with big baits

heading up to cervantes this weekend for a beach fish at my usual spot just south of hill river. plan on catching fresh bait during the week to set out for anything big lurking by.

can any one tell me what there preffered 'set bait' is when they are fishing off the beach, i tend to use sanmars but recently havent done me any wonders.

open for any suggestions on your favourite big bait for mulloway & sharks!

cheers

 A mullaway will nearly take

Wed, 2014-03-12 10:11

A mullaway will nearly take anything as long as its fresh , a live tailor herring or whiting, or fresh fillet of these three imo would be the best, as for sharks, live tailor skippy slimy mack, or dead doesnt matter for sharks imo...

defo live herring, whiting or tailor or fresh fillets on snooded hooks. although i have caught plenty of mullys and bronzies on mulies meant for tailor so remember to grab a block before you go

 skippy fillet take ribs out

Wed, 2014-03-12 13:18

skippy fillet take ribs out slice down the middle to the skin fold so the skins back to back pin the skinny edge together with a gang of 5/0 tarpons narrow end at the top thats my personal preference fresh baits always good but if it spins the old mulla wont touch it no matter what it is the skippy slabs is easy to get i to swim no matter what conditions

Whole live poddy (small)

Wed, 2014-03-12 14:52

Whole live poddy (small) mullet or chopper tailor is definately my number one pick for up here in Carnarvon chasing the Mullas!

In saying that, I have caught plenty using a fillet of either on a patternoster rig with a set of gangs.

Im actually finding Im having more hook ups using 2 hook gangs instead of the 3 hook gangs!!!

 appreciate ur input guys.

i always bring 2-3 blocks of mulies for tailor in the arvo, use 2 in the arvo, then at night set out some large baits and wait! always good to know u got a fresh block when u wake up in the morning, cousin of mine got a 75 pound sambo 10 in the morning on a mulie. u never kno.

my numba 1 belief is if u dont have a bait in the water u wont get a fish..

do gardies work well off the beach?

Snook!  I've never brought one back after casting it out, and then whiting.  Chocolate bars of the ocean in my opinion
