Fishing; with a cray snare

Went for a couple of dives on the weekend off Rockingham, and for the first time in a very long time, managed to spot a couple of flathead sitting in some sand patches between seaweed. Wasn’t quite sure what the one on Saturday was, but the one in the photo below, measured out at 49cm. Funny part is that I caught it with a snare which got me thinking, what has anyone else picked up with a snare?

In the past I have caught plenty of Cuttlefish, puffer fish and of course crays. I managed to noose a Dusky Morwong around the tail once but it flicked and broke my snare (day over crayfish wise), and have never tried again.

So what have you caught via a cray snare?

In fact it's the only thing I've caught with my snare :). My only cray was hand caught when it escaped from my mates efforts, it swam right to me poor thing. I could never really get over the secenery to concentrate on craying and my mate was like a ferret under the ledges.

Obviously several cuttlefish but managed to also get a flatty, a dusky morwong and so so close to a harly. The morwong was pretty funny as it took me for a ride right as my mate was watching, lol.

Harlies and flathead are commonplace

I have almost looped one flathead that I swear is almost 900mm long. have had it in the loop so real close several times but it is simply too strong - didn't think until I saw it with my own eyes that they grew that big here in the west - resembles a dusky

The one i picked up above was really light, and almost looked like it had a duck bill when i snared it. Interesting to see the colour change.

I saw a bigger one the day before on another spot and didnt grab it as i wasnt sure.

Cant say I have ever seen a Harly, but have seen a couple of small dhuies. Always seem to scatter as soon as they see a diver though.

Harlies often follow you around

As you scare up prey for them hence often close enough to snare - have watched several get a feed as a result of my activities
