Fishing Reel Cleaning & Maintenance (PLEASE HELP)
Submitted by thebrett on Wed, 2012-04-04 22:37
Hi Guys just wondering if anyone could help me out, I recently lent my reel to a mate and it came back full of sand and just not in good working condition anymore, I first rinsed it in warm water and dried, then took the reel apart and it was full of sand, I cleaned all the sand of it, re greased the internal parts, oiled the bearings, and then sprayed with pertek reel deal, but it still seems to not be spinning that smooth anymore and its making a noise when spinning when it never used to,
If anyone could help me out or give me any tips that would be great
(This is a pic of the reel)

Sand gets everywhere.
Sand get's everywhere and it's most likely in one or more of the bearings. If you haven't already you'll have to take off the shields and flush them out completely, not just put more oil on them. It's fiddly but better than having to fork out and wait for new ones. If you have to pull apart the anti-reverse bearing be really gentle about it other wise you'll be on all fours looking for the rollers.

Knigit is spot on, there will
Knigit is spot on, there will be sand inside the bearings. A real pain in are ass to clean it all out. I'd also be telling the mate you lent it to that he owes you a bottle of bourbon for all the work your having to do & I wouldn't be lending him any fishing gear again.

That's what happens when you
That's what happens when you lend shit to other people. I'd be really pissed off. I keep an eye on my deckie with my Tyrnos reels to makes sure he's using right etc and I'll tell him if not. The stuff's too expensive not to.

Yeah I would send it back for
Yeah I would send it back for a service and give him the bill for sure.
Not that expensive - and cheap for him compared to the other option(which is making him buy it)
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

For a reel of that price it
For a reel of that price it is almost always a better option of buying a new one, the service cost coul be half the reels value. Keep the old reel for spare parts and you'll never have to worry. You have done the right thing by giving it a go. Loaner reels - Alveys and spinfishers lol.

Good advice
Good advice from every one , sounds like it got washed around in the surf. Even with good cleaning the bearings might be stuffed. Also the antireverse is a very sensitive bearing ( as others have said . ) It also could be corroded.
I would put it in its box, hand it to my (ex)mate and tell him to go get me a new one.

as the others have said it could have stuffed bearings
but you may also have over greased it and this will stop it from spinning freely

looks like your mate will
looks like your mate will have a bill of a new reel. that fine sand will be almost impossible to get out of everywhere. vive your mate that reel and he buys you a new one and DONT lend your gear out, it usually comes back with something wrong.

Well if you're going to take it swimming again
then leave the grease in there
