Fishing in Singapore and Malaysia - any suggestions ?

Heading up to Singapore and Malaysia in December with SWMBO and the kids..

Now while I don't mind the odd shopping venture with the family, I don't particularly want 2 weeks of it Wink

Does anyone have any suggestions for fishing either rivers/lakes/ponds, beach or offshore up in Singapore and Malaysia ?

Having a quick read on the net, I was pleasantly surprised to see the likes of Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks being caught up there.

Wouldn't mind getting amongst these, or some of the other larger local S/E Asian species..

cheers,

Paul

yeah...heaps of fishing

Thu, 2008-09-11 19:39

yeah...heaps of fishing spots around singapore and a couple of good lakes in malaysia.the most popular species down that way is called snakeheads...sometimes 2-10kg but could reach 40lb in some lakes that havent been touch by other people..if u can find some lakes...there are two types of snake heads, one called toman..which is a bigger a more vicious species like a tailor..and a smaller one called haruan which commonly dont go over 6kg..but theres heaps of fishes down that way..try using some minnows and river softies they sell down there and ull get into them..if u wanna fish with baits.live frogs, fishes and worm are the go there...u can get them from normal tackle shops..
as for the barramundi's they call them siakap down there in singapore..and the best baits to use for them are live prawns but dead will do fine...pm or ask if u have any other questions im from malaysia..and would be happy to answer all ur questions

no probs mate..just take

Thu, 2008-09-11 21:31

no probs mate..just take care of urself...especially in malaysia..its not like australia...heaps more murderers, robbers, thieves ,etc...if ur driving on the highway or on any other quiet streets at night..try to think smart..as a couple of years ago when i was back there,my uncle was rob on the highway...they chuck a couple of eggs on ur cars wind screen, and when ya try to clean it with ur wipers ,the egg just spreads till ur whole window is covered in egg yolk..and u'll have to stop the car..thats when they rob ya..and also if ur on a quite street and if ur car tyre got punctured dont stop aye..much more worth it driving on until u get to a safe place or home....other than that enjoy ur trip aye..now trying to scarce anyone or discourage anyone for going there..just a safety tip that i have experience...thats why i love australia so much... = ]....cya...take care and enjoy mate

The saltwater season will be

Thu, 2008-09-11 21:50

The saltwater season will be closed in Dec for the West Coast of Malaysia, so dont plan on chasing bill fish.  If you are chasing snakehead, it's going to be a wet and messy trip, so be prepared.

I've lived in Malaysia for 2

Fri, 2008-09-12 00:39

I've lived in Malaysia for 2 year, but havent seen anything like OT is talking about luckily. I wouldnt be too worried about crime though.

Havent fished there though. Just for places to go, check out some of the islands though (penang, pankor, lankawi, tioman). Tioman has some pretty good diving for example. Genting highlands and taman negara could be some other places to look into depending on what you want to do in your holidays (apart from fish ;) )

Are you sure it was Malaysia

Fri, 2008-09-12 10:17

Are you sure it was Malaysia if it was just the occasional driver? lol

For those who havent been there, traffic works a lot differently over there, everyone cutting it front, pulling out in front, suddenly turning, running stop signs etc. The funny thing is that when you get used to it, it works, and theres not nearly as many accidents as you might otherwise expect (because everyone knows how everyone drives). Can be a little bit of a shock going from Perth driving to KL driving at sometimes though :p

That sounds exactly like Perth, except we add alcohol and speeding into the mix Yell

Paul, if my memmory serves me well (and it doesn't always Yell) I'm pretty sure one of my FWA DVDs covers Ryan (Thipy) doing a trip up in (Malaysia Ryan?) with SC, might want to have a word with him.
