Fishwrecked trip

Well the weather was good and we meet up with Colin and Matt at the marina, the boat was launched and we were of, there were some high hopes with Colin still to get his first Dhuie and Matt to better his P.B. Colin got the show on the way with a nice harlequin

Some small fish followed ,Sergeant Baker and a small Blackass ,moving out a little further and the next spot and Colin was on to a good fish ,only the have a bust off ,two minutes later and Matt was on this time the fish was brought to the surface yes a nice Dhuie and a P.B for Matt 6.5kg dhuie

After the photo i went to get the hook out and there was Collins hook sitting in its mouth

The day was a little slow with only one or two fish pulled from each spot .Jesse still got the gift even after his hair cut, he got a nice 10kg dhuie

Well Colin won the most species and Matt got the most dhuies he had a good run with his jigs nailing 4 dhuies in a row Colin did get his first Dhuie even if it was a little one. They can only get bigger hopefully.

In all a great day and good company thanks guys and I’m sure we will do it again

good work guys

was a bit slow for us aswell... the moring was best

managed 3 pinky's, 1 9kg dhuie (and the same thing happened to us, i busted off, and Tailor marc hooked up 30 secs lagter...and there was my hook in his mouth!!!)

Managed a nice gummy, and we lost some good fish :(
Tailor marc lost something big, on for 5-10 minutes and only managing to move it a few metres from the bottom...but with big head shakes.

Well done guys

Good variety there and some great Dhuies.
You did better than we did, thats for sure. Saturday was a non event for us, with only 3 dhuies and 2 pinkies all day. Only kept one of each plus a good feed of massive sand whiting off that spot we got the giant flounder from.
Good onya Paul, for getting the guys onto some great fishing in difficult circumstances (I hate northerlies).

Cheers

What a great day we had

Mon, 2008-09-29 07:55

A great skipper, boat and crew and the weather turned out okay in the end. I managed to catch a few fish I had never caught before, had a few good bust-offs (always good for the stories to the tell the wife when you get home), and learned a bit more about boat fishing in WA.
Many thanks Paul and Jesse - really had a fantastic day. Well done to Matt and his Hlokktopussy jig.

What pound leader were you using for your rigs Colin?  That dhufish photo is the evidence I've been waiting for a few years for.

Colin ended up getting 7

Mon, 2008-09-29 18:05

Colin ended up getting 7 fish and 7 species (the smorgasboard :p). Jesse got the largest dhuie at 10kg, Paul got two dhuies and two baldies, and I got 7 dhuies. Thanks Paul for the cracker trip Laughing I think the number of fish and dhuies caught as well as managing the avoid rain all day I would say speaks to Paul's skills as a skipper *thumbs up*

I ended up getting 4 legal dhuies to one octa jig. They were all a few cm over size, but I allready had two in the hatch so back down with the release weight they went. I kept the 6.5kg and a 3-4kg one, and released a 51cm one (all 30lb line), but the 4 with the octa jig I was using 8lb line which was a lot of fun (not to mention, it brings them up slower). Was hoping for some snapper or baldies but I dont think I can complain with 4 legal dhuies :p. Boofhead, just held the jigs 1-2m off the bottom and used a gentle sweeping motion, as well as jiggling them a bit gently, and also letting the motion of the boat impart some action. Just varied it up really.

We could hear you for most of the day on the radio...... and wouldn't worry about the negative comments.... they sounded pretty envious to me.

Hi Paul G

I was in the same boat as you with the Jigs and plastic baits.

I had tried them but with no success...until i had someone show me the secrets of rigging them up and the action required.

Now usually i get them out every trip, and always catch fish. But this weekend i decided not too...but probably should have.

I was using 30lb braid, and 25lb braid... i think i snapped off on 3-4 fish on the 25lb braid!! one of them being the 9kg dhu Marc got.

Well done lads, and well done on the jigs, always fun.

Hi Brodie we use 30lb braid and don't normally have any trouble but you do get them days when things just go wrong. i notice in one of your pis the pen850-950 in the background great reel thats what i have love ..em only use my overheads over 50m or trolling.

I tried putting a 7" gulp

Tue, 2008-09-30 15:21

I tried putting a 7" gulp shad on the top trace of my patternoster rig with bait on the bottom, just to see if it got any attention. Two Dhufish and a snapper later and it was still there, unmolested. I think you really need to work them a bit. Drifted, just like the bait, it didn't seem to get any hits.

Tue, 2008-09-30 15:44

Hey paul,

Yeah that Reel is Marcs.

I do have a Penn 850ss aswell, but it stay on one of my beach rods usually. I take a Okuma VSystem 80 out with me loaded with 25lb braid, and a spare spool stocking 65lb briad.

Really nice reel, but 2 downsides to it. When i first got it, it was way over packed with reel greece, they the anti reverse drag didnt work properly. Second was a washer on the handle, which broke in half. (They have since changed these on the new versions) Other than that, awsome reel

but i always jig with egg beaters.

Tue, 2008-09-30 15:47

Did the line snap Bodie, or get cut off? If theres no sharp objects nearby (manage to keep the fish of the bottom) then I dont know why it would break unless you're using the wrong drag or a bad line. So i'm assuming they're pulling you into the coral?

nah it snapped my 25lb...the one i remember anyway. Pretty sure it wa sa big pinky..as it was in the same spot we got the previous 3, while drift baiting a yellowtail.

Lots of head thumps, and got it up about half way until it did a quick run to the bottom and probably a combination of that, and me going a little too hard, and Marc hooked up at the same time.

Ah well thats fishing!!!
