Fitting a deck wash - some advice please

Hi all, I want to fit a TMC deck wash kit to the boat. Box doesnt have instructions so I googled up how to do it. They all install the water pickup with a thru-hull fitting but I dont want to go through the transom if I dont have to. Pump will be bolted to the floor next to the engine well. Is there any reason why I cant just go through the engine well with the water pick up hose ? then over the splash wall and plumb it down the side of the motor wth some elbow joiners. Also I figure if i do that i wont have to add a water on/off lever in the water pickup hose between the pump intake and where the water picks up thanks for any advice if youve fitted one of these before

Over the transom

I did it as you're suggesting on my first boat and ran a stainless curved pickup, for when underway, underneath a pump, which then had a hose running over/through the engine well.

i used it as a live bait tank feed, and deck wash combo.
It worked ok, but didn't look "nice"

Non+Return+Valve

You can ,you need to leave enough water in the pipe to prime the pump to start the flow.
Could also put a strainer on the end of the pick up.

Is to fit a treaded coupling on the pick up so you can plug the garden hose in and flush the pump out with fresh water after a day out,

I just dump my inlet hose

Tue, 2020-01-14 10:51

I just dump my inlet hose over the side, it has a 12oz lead weight attached and it works like a treat. I was the same and didn't want to put any holes through the hull.

Go freshwater

Whack a small tank wherever and wash down with fresh , dries faster than salt and you've got a shower onboard too .

I got my mechanic to install

Tue, 2020-01-14 11:50

I got my mechanic to install a through hull strainer (not through the transom) with a SS ball valve and the deck wash is fed through a 2 port live well pump. Looks neat and works a dream

Fresh

Tue, 2020-01-14 13:59

fresh water is the way to go.

I had a 100L water bladder (from Whitworths) as well as saltwater pick up on my deck wash, thinking I could use bulk salt water for the main/bulk of the cleaning, and then rinse with fresh water. I had simple garden hose fittings that could switch between the 2 via a 2-way valve. very easy set up that worked very well. youd be surprised how often you'll use fresh water when you have it! its great having a fresh water rinse after diving, hot days, etc.

funnily enogh though, I ended up basically just using the fresh water tank, and rarely used salt! I think the tank would last about 7 -9 minutes or so, which was enough to give a good wash the deck and sides, and also give the whole boat a thorough blast when it was on the trailer! I think the only time I used salt water was when we were on extended (3 or 4 day) trips, just to bulk clean the deck, and conserve the fresh water.

replacing the water in the bladder regularly helps stop the water going bad, and a cap full of vinegar every few tanks stops mould, bacteria, etc from forming in the tank. you cant taste it either.

Seawater intake through the transom???

Wed, 2020-01-15 21:43

Why would you want to pick up through the transom? There is no water against the transom when you are on the plane. If you want it to work as intended, ie, washdown water available at all times, your pickup needs to be through the hull, with a scoop. I originally installed mine without a scoop, big mistake, didn't pick up while at speed. Also made the mistake of fitting a 12l/min job. Now running a 20l/min, much, much better.

Just bite the bullet and do it properly, through-hull stainless fitting with a stainless ball valve on top.

 we had transome mount using

Thu, 2020-01-16 17:15

we had transome mount using a length of 15mm pvc pipe with the bottom cut on an angle forwards only just below the the hull level . picked up the water easily without causing a rooster tail . i now have a stainless fitting with a small intake pipe, havnt fixed to the transome yet , going to use silicone first to try it before i drill into the transome

its odd but i have two

its odd but i have two through my transom which are factory fitted! (well known aussie boat builder) - one is a deck wash and the other a live bait intake. There is plenty of room to have put them through the hull bottom so cant think why they would have done that?

Try

Fri, 2020-01-17 10:08

https://www.whitworths.com.au/search?q=waterscoop

TIP:to bend PVC pipe ,put hot/warm sand down the pipe where you you want the bend block inside of pipe with rag so the sand doesn't fall through ,it will maintain the dia and bend in the pipe.(remove sand after bent ,of course)
