Flathead tackle

Hi guys,

long time reader and thought i should get involved after taking advantage of all the advice.

I have been targeting flathead in the shallows recently just throwing around hard lures. Just wondering if its worth putting on a heavier trace as a I lost a big fish on the weekend after it engulfed the lure. running 4lb mainline.

thanks in advance

I use for 4lb mainline mate you should be fine, just add maybe 2 rod lengths of a decent fluro carbon leader (6-10lb) and you should be fine, decent uni knot or the likes and you'll be fine. The heavier the line the harder it is to cast out small lures/hardbodies/sp's or whatever. and then the sport of gettign smashed on light gear in the shallows makes that kind of fishing what it is. unfortunately for the sport of fishing light gear and rods your going to lose fish but thats life ay?

where you been fishing? has it been hot with fish?

good luck mate, just an additional extra sometime i use heavier fluro if aiming for tailor(think teeth)

cheers for that.  might try a leader and see if it decreases strikes and go from there.

Mainly been around the flats near applecross and pt walter. A few fish most sessions to 40cm along with heaps of blowies getting in the way.
