Flushing new yammie

Hi guys, have had me new/second hand coast runner for a month now. Quick question, first time i went to flush it with muffs on it it would not pump water out of the tell tail hole. I then had me mate across the road bring his drum across and filled it and no dramas. When i tried it again the week after it still didnt pump out of there. Now i have a small (4mm) hole just above where the muffs go on i am thinking this is another suction hole?? In the mean time i have been screwing the hose off on the right hand side and connecting a hose fitting into it and it seems to flush the motor with water coming out of all the normal areas.

Is this ok and how the rest of the yammie four storke owners do it or am i doing something wrong. Motor is and 03 yammie four stroke 60 hp.

Any help would be appreciated guys

Cheer rossco

Rossco, I have got a 60hp 4 stroke yammie and also a 150hp 4 stroke yammie and on both motors I only flush out using the garden hose connector. I let it run for around 15mins with the motor turned off which is what the owners manual states to do.

Cheers Zac

rosco i have the same

rosco i have the same setup...don't run the motor with the hose connector...apparently it is a reverse flush just do one or the other not both. had mine for 3 years and do exactly what zac says. great motors.

if your speedo plays up check that the 3mm hole half way up the front of the leg is not blocked. run a gentle stream of water into it to keep it clear after each run.

I've got the same motor and

I've got the same motor and use the ear muffs to flush mine with the motor running. I've used the hose connector too but a mechanic told me you get a better flush with the ears because everything is moving where with the othe option the impeller is stationary.
I personally don't think it even matters, neither way will flush all salt out, my tip is to use your boat as much as possible to prevent blockages.

new muffs

Tue, 2010-09-07 08:12

Rossco , try buying a new set of Muffs , i have a 150 4st and the muffs from my previous motor didint work to well , i purchased a different set and all good , but you do need good water pressure.  The other way through the connector is good but doesnt not let the impellor turn and pressure the system to get all of the salt build up out of the motor, but some service techs say this is sufficient

Cheers for your replys guys will look around for a rectangular type muff and i will do a bit of both, as i can see both sides with or with out the impellor turning. But the silent flush is bloody good idea.

Cheers again guys

Dual flush points

Tue, 2010-09-07 18:34

Went for a ride in the latest Naiad with twin 350hp Yammies a fortnight back and when flushing them they had a separate point hooked up for flushing the power head and use the bottom one for the lower leg parts.

Sports version

Tue, 2010-09-07 20:36

Not  trying to take over the thread. The boat was a sports version of the 10 metre Naiad that we [Carnarvon Sea Rescue] are getting built. Cruised across Cockburn  Sound at 40+ knots when it was blowing 25kn from the SW. In the shelter of Garden Island cranked it up to 60knots with more to go if needed. Then the owner asked if we had been wave jumping before?

So out passed Carnac  and blasting into a 2-2.5 metre swell and lovely slop from the 25 kn South wester at 30 knots sometimes getting 3-5 metres clear of the water in a boat the weighs something like 4 tonne fully loaed and four big blokes hanging on.

If my mind hadn't been made up on our choice of new rescue boat before it was certainly made up now.Two of us on the selection committee had taken another type of rescue vessel for a test run previously and weren't impressed with its performance in the same sort of seas we were in with the Naiad. It was like chalk and cheese.

Does the engine need to be

Thu, 2010-09-09 14:21

Does the engine need to be running at operating temperature to ensure it is flushed properly? Should the thermostat open up when it is hot to let water in?
