formosa tomahawks

anyone got any good or bad feedback on the formosa tomahawks?? namely the 580 half cab.

the old man is thinking about getting one, and i havent heard much on them at all. they look pretty good, and seem well priced, but if anyone that owns or has ridden in one has got some opinons, that would be helpful too. apparantly the 580 is over 6m L.O.A, does anyone know if this is correct?

a decent sea-trial should also put any doubts to rest too....  i might organise one soon.

 our new sponser Waterworld

our new sponser Waterworld sell the Formosa brand too, i was very close to gettting the 6.2m centre cab before going second hand, i've read good things about them but i never got around to getting a ride in one which of course is a must. I'm sure either waterworld or seasport will arrange a time for a spin if you approach them, i'm sure it's not an easy time to be selling boats at the moment.

Couldn't be happier

Sun, 2011-08-21 09:27

I bought a 5.5 classic Centre Cab and couldn't be happier with it. The Tomahawk was my first choice but the budget didn't stretch that far, it's not that much more but where do you stop. I haven't had the tape measure out but the 5.5 is sold as 5.8 overall. The new models on the classic have the new style transom and the extra room outside has been taken from inside the boat, I prefer the older style as most of the time I am inside the boat, funny enough. Still running the motor in at the moment so don't know the top speed but at 5000rpm does around 30knts with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke.

I'm no boating expert so I watched for 18 months or so and read the reviews and the worst thing they could say was the design of the dash brow could be better, Formosa responded and changed, but still were criticised so I believe now they have done away with the brow all together. I upgraded from a 5.2 Savage Cuddy Cab and the extra room and ease of use with the Centre Cab has made a massive difference. Unfortunately I got it about 3 months ago and have been working monday to friday in the city (don't know how people do this) but soon heading back to my normal life of FIFO and the hour meter will be getting a work out.

When comparing on price I couldn't go past it. I am also a queenslander living in the west so I have no loyalty to West Australian built boats. The ride is much better than the old boat and much more stable at rest. The kids love it and never went into the cab on the other boat anyway, but the centre cab is actually more roomy than the cuddy cab. All I need to do now is find some decent fish to justify my purchase to the wife. Of course the first family outing and the wife nails the biggest fish and the kids cleaned up on quantity of fish, I think I caught a wrasse.

This is not an endorsement for Formosa, just my personal opinion. There are always questions on the site about which boat to buy but for me it was

1. What willl it be used for

2. Find a boat you will use in the budget you can afford

As I said I'm rapped with it.

good to find a happy owner,

good to find a happy owner, you just don't see many over here for some reason and they bloody look like a well built boat in the tomahawk range anyway and look like they will take a beating no worries at all.

The 580 Tomahawk is awesome it was a finalist in Australia's Greatest Trailer Boats.

I dont have one in stock, but I'm sure I will be able to arrange a test ride on one we sold recently to a very happy owner.
