Free chart app for iPhone

Memory-Map iPhone app was brought to my attention this morning.
Looks interesting, does a little bit more than the Navionics Marine Australia in that if you BUY their iPhone app, and the PC version, you can sync points between them.
I have discussed this very feature with Navionics and they say that one day, it will become available between their iPhone/Android app, and the Navionics PC app (v1.3, 25e), but then they said that pinch zoom will come out for Android and I haven't seen that either.

yip, I got the Navionics
yip, I got the Navionics download on my Telstra T-Touch Pad, works well as a chart plotter with a simple track function, but bugger all other functions.
good chart, includes Swan River all the way up to Guildford.
I'm now using the Telstra T touch pad as a back up on the boat now.
as for the pinch and zoom feature, the biggest issue is the screen conductivity with Android.

yeah thats a bugger, that
yeah thats a bugger, that pinch function is a nice quick tool for zooming in etc.
I played with a "new product" the other day thats also a touch screen GPS ( marine) but they too did not have the pinch function, seems it chews a lot of procesor power and they did not go with that function. With some luck they may upgrade their software as well when they launch to the public soon...
My Samsung phone was a push and wipe movement to reduce and increase screen size. It's ok, but not great by miles....

They probably just put it in
They probably just put it in the 'too hard' basket and didnt bother trying to make it work. You do need capactive touch screens instead of the resistive ones that have been more popular so far (starting to change since the iphone).
The software may be free, but how did you go with the maps Jamie? I had a quick look on their store and the marine maps were not much off the full navionics chart (and not the full iphone ones). Somewhere else you can get them?

I can tell you the one I
I can tell you the one I downloaded for about $12 on Android was for all Australia, better than my present 2003 chart I have for my Furuno, as it included the upper reaches of the Swan. I'd say it's as good as any pre-loaded map on the market.
I went the full Navionics to makesure I got the free upgrade to V5 when it comes out on the T-Tab, also I had the latest Android at that stage as well which helped.
You right on the screen, mine is a resitive one, so not going to get the pinch effect so easly done.
But for under $300 I got a Android phone tablet with GPS marine charts as my back up on the boat, and it's a full phone as well. You can't moan for that kind of money for a nice big 7 inc screen as well, plus the ablity to set it up in portait or landscape mode.

I'd say not bad value at all compared to the price on a iPhone 4 these days

Thats not really competition
Thats not really competition for an iphone 4 tony, unless you don't mind looking like a clown on the phone.
Its a tablet, judge it against other tables. The new apple ipad is slated to start from $449AU

only if you hold it up to
only if you hold it up to your ear...lol ( yes it's a big thing...lol)
but with a blue tooth headset and it in your pocket, works a treat.
ps Apple Ipad with Wifi+ 3G+GPS+ 32GB is not $449!!! if so where???????
cheapest I could find was an Apple ipad 1, with wifi+gps+3G+16GB for $600 on a pirate website. Perth store price was closer to $690!
Apple iphone is in another league all together, much better harware and screen etc, but the price is what the killer in my books.
As much as I like Apple products, I hate their control over the apps you run and the over priced costs we pay for them.
Also I wanted a camera in it and ability to take video ( T-tab has front and back 2MP camera) and use a micro USB external harddisk for my. And I also wanted to use micro SD cards for data as well and when the new 64Gb card comes out, it will be able to have the same memory as the Ipad.
Point I was making is the for a cheap and simple tablet with a good gps marine function the andriod tablets are much more cost effective.
I think the Ipad 2 will be a far better product in forms of functions, camera etc...but at what cost again???

Thats the $449 I mentioned
Thats the $449 I mentioned for the new apple ipad, not the old one. A few of the mac stores have mentioned that the new ipad 2 will ship from $449.

well that will be a dam good
well that will be a dam good deal then and may swing me to an Ipad 2 then,
thanks for the heads up on that
cheers
Tony
ps update, just popped into the Apple store this morning to check and was politely told only the Apple ipad1 with the wifi and 16GB memory was on sale for $449. And the base model of the Apple Ipad 2 will launch at around $600 in Australia, same as the pre-dicounted Apple 1 rrp. Bugger.
Went onto the Walmart sight and found that they where selling the iPad2 in the USA for just over $500 US plus shipping, but not to outside USA. Base model was a Wifi only model and not a 3G.
also found out even though they have improved with the dual camera option, there is still no USB ports, no slots for SD cards and no support for flash in the new iPad2. But what is nice is the new HDMI socket to run a larger display as a second viewing port.
now to watch the prices of iPad1's with wifi, 3g and 64gb memory in the second hand market / ebay, as that may be the palce to get one for the wife... she still wants one.

Apple would be onto an
Apple would be onto an awesome product if they went with a higher res display and had a SD slot and USB! Not really the apple design philosophy it seems. Lots of competition from other players now though.
I think you can attach a USB to the ipad if you get the camera connection kit. It connects to the standard apple connector and has a USB socket on the end. Not sure what its capabilities and limitations are, but you can pull photos off a camera at least (obviously, given the name).

Having played with a Xoom as
Having played with a Xoom as well, I can see the advantages of the better screen.
But in my view Apple products are over priced, kind of like the BMW's of the IT world. Yes they cheaper in the USA, but here they not worth it for " bang for buck"
I find my micro USB and SD slots very useful for back ups, picture transfers and running movies from as well. I keep about 30 movies on a portable hard disk and then just load up the one I want to watch or leave it on the USB cable.
Aplle does not like uncontrolled access to it's hardware and so many products are App locked or policed by internal software etc. Steve Jobbs is alwasy watching .....

With Android 3 now out with it begining to grwo like Linex did, I'd give Android OS 2 more years and it will be the class leader, with hardware to match.
cheers

Apple has announced the
Apple has announced the following prices for Wi-Fi only models in Australia:
• 16GB - $579
• 32GB - $689
• 64GB - $799
For the Wi-Fi plus 3G models, Apple has set these prices:
• 16GB - $729
• 32GB - $839
• 64GB - $949
The Wi-Fi plus 3G models will require users to purchase data plans from mobile providers if they intend to use their iPads outside the range of Wi-Fi services
have been told with a crack code app you can get your Iphones GPS & 3G to wifi to the new Ipad2, but it is not as responsive as the full 3G model.
Also base models with WIFI only and no 3G, have no GPS reciever in them either.
So we back to $729 for cheapest 3G / GPS model and then you must take a contract as well out on it.
I wonder what the second hand value of a Ipad1 with 3G / gPS will be on saturday????
as rumor is old Ipad1's will be off loaded under $500 to make away for the new model. So I suspect we could see iPad1's going second hand for under $300 soon...
