Fremantle Harbour Crunch
Submitted by Swompa on Sat, 2014-05-31 09:11
Reading thewest.com.au there was a powerboat Vs Parmeila incident in Fremantle Harbour yesterday, with two x 70 year old gents getting quite injured, and their boat not coming off too good either.
Anyone know the inside story? Ships don't generally travel too fast in the harbour and you can easily predict where they are going. Parmeila was the ship that the hit the Fremantle Railway bridge back in 2011 so I'm wondering if it is merely a coincidence.

Hope the two old chaps are okay.
Bridges don't generally travel very fast either - and they are pretty easy to predict where they are staying.......

Barge
The Parmelia is a barge I think, so the are not overly maneuverable
cheers

Either way a powerboat is a hell of a lot more manoeuvrable than a ship or barge and ships (barges can too depending on load/layout etc) have a huge blind spot to so may not even be able to see the boat.
Up to the boat to stay out of the way or get out of the way.
Maybe they misjudged it's speed and the distance to get across the front of it.

Anchored?
I cant be 100% certain but I was there squidding as this happened and the barge looked to be anchored. I remember looking at which way it was facing so I could set up my drift.
I agree that if its bigger than you then stay the f^ck away!

There is the whole 'stay out
There is the whole 'stay out of commercial traffic's way' rule though, with the damage on the pleasure craft, it looks as if it hit Parmelia.

There isnt such a rule, nor
There isnt such a rule that I know of, nor even "might is right" unless showing a restricted by draft, towing etc.
Everyone is bound by the same rules even though recs dont have to train in those lights/shapes, but there is courteousness and commonsense suggests keeping clear.
A while back during a similar debate here, some were questioning the seamanship of tug skippers etc but as I said at the time a rec would be VERY unwise to hold his course against a large commercial vessel if he wasnt able to recognise the dayshapes/lights which may give them precedence over him.
"Restricted by draft" pretty much is at the top of the heap over even man or sail powered no matter which way they are approaching (unless the other is also RBD)
If unsure then just either call on 16 and say "we'll stay out of your way", or pass green on green or whatever

By no means a rules guru,
By no means a rules guru, though I am 99% certain that in confined waters that Colregs stipulate that pleasure craft always gives way to commercial traffic regardless of whom is on port or starboard. Common sense would agree with that though we know what happened to common sense.
It is certainly a rule in sailing and I have always played motor boats with the same assumption.

I hate the fact you can't
I hate the fact you can't copy and paste via iPad.....
Colregs state that when under power, the more manuverable boat gives way. Unsure when this takes over for Port Vs Starboard.

Yep, it pisses me off too, and yes, you are correct about giving way to commercials etc.

I cant say I have ever seen
I cant say I have ever seen that, certainly ferrys on a designated run and other vessels such as pilot boats have their own lights etc
But if there isnt a set of lights to show you are/arent "commercial", how does anyone know at night who gives way to who?
You may be confusing a commercial fisherman ("gear extending from vessel") and similar with any commercial vessel as such
From memory and generally the order of priority goes
1/ restricted by draft
2/ anchored (2nd because no anchoring in a designated shipping channel)
3/ actively fishing (gear extending...) or towing (restricted ability to manoever)
4/ sailing/man power
5/ something else
6/ every other gumby commercial or otherwise
there are others here more up to the nitty gritty who are welcome to correct me (Im not googling it)

The skipper of the Parmelia
The skipper of the Parmelia didn't sound too happy when he called the incident in over the radio. Pretty sure his initial report was that a cray boat had hit them as they were leaving the port.

I went out on the river a few years back at night and it amazed me the amount of clowns out there without any lights whatsoever. I drove back from Matilda bay to Coode st and ended up with 3 boats behind me following my trail because they had no lights .......facepalm

Just had it on the news.
Just had it on the news. 80yo bloke owns the boat, hobbled down the jetty with a walking stick. Said he can't remember what happened.
If it was infact a blackout, thankfully it was a big boat and not a runabout that got hit.

Kind of ironic that it
Kind of ironic that it happens the day after the Marine Safety 'keep a lookout' campaign is launched.
