Friendly fishermen in Coral Bay
Submitted by crano on Fri, 2013-06-07 19:16
I was 10 miles out from Coral Bay and had just finished a drift and was heading back into the wind for another drift and a black Genesis called Ace-when nature calls
turned up and sounded over where we had just drifted and then came back to us and put the sea anchor in and started drifting in front of us.
I am sure they were not being rude and ignorant but were just being friendly and wanted to fish with us.
By the way I got some nice photos of you.

there is a whole ocean out there
I was fishing north west reef out of Dampier years ago when another boat turned up all would have been ok except he dropped his pick then swung around on it and banged into to us stern words were exchanged to say the least apparently we were on "his spot"

Must be a whole load of lonely people out there
Yeah mate, know exactly what you mean......getting so so sick of it. Recently had someone turn up whilst 20 miles off the coast and politely ask me if I was 'doing any good?' Before I transfered into captain tourettes I explained that although all on board our boat were good christians, that attribute got left at the ramp and suggested that the 2 tv sized screens taking up their dashboard could be used to find fish not other boats......

I agree that not everyone does Ping
and it is almost scary approaching another boat to say hello. Even had a friend yell abuse at me until he identified us, and it was a spot I had shown him off Damps.
But I was pinged badly on a favourite spot. Guy came up and even said "wow there is good fish on the sounder hey". I was a little miffed but he took off so I thought all cool. However when we returned to the area about 2 weeks later there he was anchored on the exact spot. You dont miss a Cat easily. It is a big reef area but as we approached he yelled "%$%off our spot you Pinger".
Thats when red happened. I drove up to him, said "remember a couple off weeks ago", showed him the photos on the camera and asked "who is a fng pinger now".
At least he had the manners to pull anchor and leave, because I was going a little off at the idea of being called a pinger on a spot he clearly pinged. I was going to the other end off the reef about 200m away and would have not bothered them once I saw a boat there, but knowing who he was and coping abuse was not on.
I have been tempted to put a Mobile number on the side off my rig so that if anyone does want to approach they can ring and state the intention, but thought better off this.
But I admit it is nice to have a fisho chat about what is going on, especially miles out without all this pinging shiite.
Now off mandurah I havent got any good spots (yet) so feel free to approach me anytime. All you are likely to ping is blowies!!!!

Yeah, was comin in the other
Yeah, was comin in the other day and there was a boat anchored in my path, I didnt want him to think I was pinging him and his look told me he was, I just slowed up and gave him a run down of the fishing I encountered further out and he was grateful. Its the ones that come close that say fuck all that you have to be weiry of. Its to be expected tho, Human Incompetence is a widespread disease these days, even with all the gear and tech, some just aint got no idea so they look to 'lean' on someone that does
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

must admit
if I am 30 to 40 ks of shore and see another boat I usually motor over and ask how they are going, most blokes are good with it and in fact I have had blokes say they were glad to see they weren't the only idiots out that far just need to make shore you don't encroach on the area they are fishing
