Full moon and bottom bashing???????
Submitted by biggerfish on Mon, 2010-03-01 19:46
Just wondered how everyone did today, we went out around south west bank got two sized snapper two b/a and a few undersized duhies. Seems every time we go out bottom bashing on a full moon the fish dont seem to want to swallow the bait they tend to just pick at the bait even the fish we caught today didnt bite hard like normal they more or less just picked at the bait and when we hooked them it was just a lucky strike. All in all it was a great day out just good getting out on such a beautifull calm day, litle bit choppy till about 11 but after that it was like a mill pond. So how did everyone go and has any one else got any theories on full moon bottom bashing.

for once we didnt have that prob,
, we got out today and had some monsters smashing our baits real hard but only managed to land 1 pinky at 4kg 1 red snapper at 2.5kg 1 red snapper at 1.2 kg 2 average bbums and 1 queenie at 2.5kg along with 1 pinky just under size and a small queenie both returned well. it was a nice day out after the wind dropped at around 9:30 and only got better, had a ball out there and didnt want to return but had to go to work. one thing that could have been a factor in this situation is the strong current

also never had a good
also never had a good success rate chasing reefies around a full moon. It's always been better on the lead up & fairly after.
Must have been a blue moon - conditions like today & yesterday are superb.

Full moon!
Biggerfish, I find shallow water demersal fishing isnt the best on the full moon but often jigging will entice a bite....still doesnt stop me from fishing shallow water however!
Went out yesterday and nailed some deepwater species, they dont mind the f-moon.........too dark down there to effect ha ha =)

What did you end up with
What did you end up with Ryan?
With conditions like yesterday... could have sailed to South Africa.

Pelagics & Demersals!
Conditions were awesome indeed, took a mate out that wanted dolphinfish and deepwater demersals. He got his bag limit of both pelagics & demersals. Deepwater was one drift, he got a double header of Blue-Trevala & Hapuku!
Tigh was a happy man with all fish being firsts for him & PB's =)

That would have been a work out?
Great effort Tigh and I've never caught a Blue Trevalla or Hapuka Ryan. Hint Hint! LOL.

No complaint on moon......
Im not complaining about the moon.....yesterday was just fine. Only thing to complain about was people in big game boats parking on top of FADS so close they could touch it and spooking every Dollie in sight after 5 casts 5 hookups and four fish on board to 100 casts and not one follow!

Yep!
Yep fully agree Tigh, after many years of fishing the FADS i still see ppl shutting down fish. They sit on top of the dolphinfish school and/or FAD chain. They then wonder why they arent getting fish even with livies?!?!?
The fish either spook or shut down......not productive!
Every cast we cleaned up on artificial & 2kg spin in the arvo then the big gameboat(s) shut em down by sitting on top, the blank look on their faces as they say "they arent feeding"....we'll they "were"!!!!!

now that you mention it,
now that you mention it, bruce and i were talking about it today. we only got a few good hits, and they resulted in nice fish, but there were hardly any smaller 'peckers' ie. cod and flag. that are usualy in large numbers.
I live with fear every day... sometimes she lets me go fishing.

Thanks Wazzbat, was a good work out at the end of the day. Was nice to see them pop up. Had an awsome day on the water and conditions were ideal. Been deep before but they were two firsts for me. Will be tasting very soon thats for sure! What were those lures on the Dollies again Ryan ;) ;)
