Just saw this on the ABC news website, finally some common sense in our local market. I knew I'd heard something was happening regarding making local crays more accessible to general public at a reasonable cost.

Commercial license or rec license?

jeesarz,, WTF is 50 crays per boat a year going to do? surely the pros will all be laughing at that. that's 1 full pot for them.

I find it really, REALLY shit that China is the driving force behind the price of our crays. there should be more commitment to making a resource that is only available on OUR doorstep, available to Western Australians, and at a reasonable cost.

But its a step ahead back to the old days.
Used to have a beach house in Avalon and helped the cray pros catch mullet in the bay for bait.
Allowed us to drive to their boat and buy fresh crays off the back cheap when we missed out diving for them.
Now the co-op van is waiting and they watch.
BUT I didn't know it wasn't allowed (legal) to sell off the back off the boat.
Im with jack above, rather full blues, prawns than crays to eat, but some still love it.
But I don't think the Fed Gov will be happy with this. Don't think boats is going to have an EFTPOS machine on board, so Cash it will be. Arent they trying to crack down on this :-(

I did eat enough prawns up in exmouth over a few months a few years ago to get the dreaded gout. Worst day of my life. Wont let that happen again. Big toes blew up like footballs and had me crying like a girl.

Please correct me if Im wrong but a while ago word was that a small increase in quota was going to be granted and that that part of the catch was going to be put aside only to be sold to the WA market ???
has that happened and this is an extra step or is this the compromise?

Mooka has stopped selling seafood about a year ago. Can still get some seafood from Watsies further down in Bouvard ( Crabs, whiting, some other fish and Prawns), or the guy in central Mandurah behind the Police station.
Otherwise for the fresher seafood it Flip Flop Fisheries opposite the Shire buildings. Bit more $$ but fresher than the big stores, and local mostly (from WA)

I saw a doco awhile ago about some pros setting up there own market at the wharf to sell their goods dont where it was in australia, but i guess this is pretty close.
I think its really hard for small businesses to get quality seafood regurlaly as the bigger businesses (AAA customers to sealanes or whatever) get first dibs and the small places get whats left.

I really sympathise with jackfrost and crusy 111, I know exactly the pain gout gives you and there is nothing else like it on this earth.
I hold the view that this country is getting paranoid about people using cash to buy anything, yes I acknowledge that there is a cash under ground society but I don't think that it is as big as is being made out, but that's just my view. The days when you could go down to freo and buy fresh fish and crays from the back of the fishing boats have long since gone, unfortunately.
All this wonderful progress stuff is not all that wonderful IMO and as for having a limit of just 50 crays allowed to be sold, give me a break will ya.
It is this countrys resource yes Australias and Australian citizens should be able to buy it at a price that allows the pro to make a profit and the citizens to buy it at a reasonable price.
IMO what wasn't able to be taken by force of arms is in danger of being taken by the almighty yaun or yen.

the problem with selling them from the boat isnt cash (at least not from fisheries), it is the quota system.
How can you control the quantity with the Total Allowable Catch if its a free for all?
I have very little info on how this works but the crays are being sold off the boat in Gero for $25 each, about half the shop price.
looks to me as though Fisheries issues 50 tags which must be attached to the lobster for sale.
Im not sure if the 50 crays is part of their quota or 50 on top which must be sold not consigned (which makes great sense to me and Id support it)
50 per licence is roughly 15000 crays, about 6900kg or 1% of the fishery.
To me it makes great sense as
While not everyone will get some, it certainly addresses the "grassroots" selling of crays in holiday towns etc

Perhaps an allocated percentage has to stay in the country like dom gas, that would surely drop the price alot of the good stuff....
Of the 300T of Reds the pros catch in WA I wonder what percentage of them are sold here in this state, I'd imagine if they had to sell 45T within the state along with 15% of everything else that is "harvested" then supply would drop the price dramatically....

Bit of a difference there--you can only mine it or suck it out of the ground once, fishermen do harvest, and when managed properly, it is sustainable.
And what happened to my post in this thread where I pointed out that the high price of local seafood was purely down to fisheries management and recreational activism--you want affordable seafood for all, but the recco industry all over Australia tries to get commercial operations shut down where they can--can't have it both ways, fellas...
Anyone see the Landline episode recently about how both parties in the last Vic state elections were falling over one another promising to get the small beach haul fishery in PPB closed down, due to the perception there were votes in i?. The Victorian recco council ran a thoroughly dishonest but obviously effective campaign on it. And guess who was the only party to back the commercials? The Greens! Because there was absolutely no science behind it, just inflated bullshit figures about the value of the recco sector to the economy.
Go figure.

They claimed 800,000 fishers but only 100,000 licences sold, similar with boats, the number claimed was multiples of what was registered.

Yes, it was blatantly dishonest.
They tried to hide behind the fact it was complied by Ernst&Young, but, of course, they only worked with figures given to them by the recco council, standard disclaimer by them applied. The boat numbers claimed would be hilarious, if it were just not such a lie--They claimed in excess of 400,000 recreational vessels--a quick fact check with Vic transport showed there were only about 140,0000 (?) registered. And, of course, not all of these would actually wet a line.
