Furuno 587 transducer
Submitted by Chasin' Tail on Wed, 2015-09-30 14:57
Hi Furuno gurus, looking at upgrading to a 587, and was set on the TM260. Any other options I should be looking at? Fishing mainly 60-100m and would like to get into the 200's at some stage. Not enough room to go a wet box and already have a through hull for my other sounder. Is the TM260 my only real option in 1kw?
Thanks in advance.

587 transducers
just been through this process and received my gear from eastern states today, there are not too many people in W.A that have much real knowledge on transducers, I went to Taylor's in Henderson and they were useless, I knew more than them and that's not much ended dealing with ch smith in VIC and they were very knowledgable and very fair with pricing, you are very limited with transom mount transducers and a tm260 only has a 6degree beam angle (as does a b164 through hull) and the foot print is fairly small on the area you are sounding, if you go to the airmar website it actually gives you a table that gives you the size of the footprint at different depths. I ended up going for a through hull tranny an ss175 wide beam which has a 25degree beam angle.
Call me on 0411147070 if you want any more info.

The 260 have an advantage
The 260 have an advantage when bottom bouncing if your marking fish your normally also dragging your rig thru it and getting the bites and fish

For your depths have a look
For your depths have a look at the TM258. Better anger bigger beam for shallow water yet will still fish out to 300 on a good day. Unless fishing deeper then 300mtrs the TM260 is a waste of money. I have had both and the TM258 would suit you better

Thanks for the input gents,
Thanks for the input gents, can you plug the TM260/TM258 straight into the 587 or do you need the MB1100 matching box?
The TM258 looks like the go and just over half the price of the 260.

Straight in
You can plug it straight in provided it's got the Furuno connector - I've the 260 straight into a 587

TM260/TM258
beam width is still an issue in shallow water fishing eg up to 100mtrs, stats quoted on airmar website give figures of at a depth of 30mtrs you only have a beam width of 3.3mtrs which is barely wider than your boat and at 60mtrs you have a beam width of 6.6mtrs on 200khz the tm258 is not a lot better the beam width is similar but longer so you are not gaining much.
Chatted to a guy on here that installed SS264 wide beam trannys and he swears by them.
Most of our fishing is done in under 100mtrs of water and with the range of 1kw transom mount trannys available not sure it's worth spending the money to only see that amount of bottom.
Just my 2 cents worth hope it helps.
