Furuno 588 marking waypoints

Hi All,

Recently purchased and installed my new Furuno 588 as a dedicated sounder. I also have a dash mount Raymarine C97 which I use as for my charts/plotter. Can anyone offer any advice about connecting the Furuno to the Raymarine unit to mark any locations that I come across from the Furuno as I've found it quite painful so far trying to mark those locations by guessing on the Raymarine. Maybe a better option would be to purchase another GPS antenna and connecting it straight to the Furuno and marking the locations on the Furuno instead? Any advice or suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers, Kuzi.

The FCV 588 is only a sounde! Can't be used as a GPS! The mark button on it is for if you link the 588 to a navnet or TZ2 GPS via nmea cables. You can hit mark on the sounder and it comes up on your GPS. I don't think you can link Furuno to any other GPS apart from max sea and c plot.

Just double tap wpt on the raymarine and it will mark your vessels position unless you have the courser on sum where else

Connect the NMEA wiring

Tue, 2016-06-14 17:02

I've connected the NMEA wiring from my Furuno 585 to my Lowrance gps.  When I hit the mark button on my 585 you can move the cursor to where you want it on the display, hit enter.  Then it pulls the gps coordinates from the gps and displays it on the Furuno and also saves it under menu- data- waypoint list. I think you can save 15 sets of coordinates.  You then need to punch it in manualy into the gps and mark the spot. I know, labour intensive but it can be done.  I connected the Furuno blue, green, white and yellow to the Lowrance green, blue, brown and yellow wiring.  I hope this makes sense.

Is it not easier to. Mark it

Tue, 2016-06-14 19:04

Is it not easier to. Mark it on the GPS then ya done. I know the track on a raymarine is pretty rubbish but lowrance is good.

Mark it as soon as you see it then run past it following your track and get a more accurate fix on it

Labour intensive! We're all getting a bit carried away I think! When I started fishing with my old man we had land marks a paper sounder and a marker bouy! Now it's to

hard to follow a GPS track?

Yeah Reece I totally agree.  Mark as you go and back track on the GPS is pretty easy.  Punching in coordinats on the go is a lot harder but each to their own I suppose.  I was only pointing out that it can be done should anyone choose too.

That's exactly what I've tried to do but it's hit and miss depending on the speed you are travelling and what range the plotter is set at when travelling. Easier said than done.

 Definitely makes sense.

Tue, 2016-06-14 21:03

Definitely makes sense. That's what kind of info I was looking for. I guess connecting a stand alone GPS antenna to the unit would make sense also and I would expect it to be quite accurate for position.

How accurate is the GPS info fed from your Lowrance to the Furuno after wiring it up the way you have? Did you not consider a stand alone GPS antenna?

Very accurate

Tue, 2016-06-14 21:19

Very accurate. I think because it pulled the coordinate from the gps when you mark it and the fact that you just put it back into the same gps it's pretty accurate.  Joining a few wires was alot easier than buying and mounting another antenna.

Thanks for the info quest. I'll look into trying to do the same thing.

This might be worth a look ! - Just so I make sure I have it right, that would be:

Furuno Blue to Lowrance Green
Furuno Green to Lowrance Blue
Furuno White to Lowrance Brown
Furuno Yellow to Lowrance Yellow

Yes ?

 Reece,

Cheers for that. I suspect that you can connect a stand alone antenna to it from what I have read in the user manual. It could be an easy option if this is possible. I will need to do some more research or contact Furuno directly to confirm this.

Tue, 2016-06-14 20:32

This is THE worst feature of the 585/587/588. An otherwise brilliant sounder is hamstrung by Furuno's pigheadedness on this subject. It would be dead easy for Furuno to fix this by getting normal NMEA sentences to be output that any GPS can read but they choose not to so you have to buy a Furuno GPS.....other manufactures are just as bad, it's a general conspiracy that makes a mockery of the NMEA standard

 ^ yep.

And the kicker is that you can only run C-map on the Furuno GPS.

That being said I have 'piggybacked' my Furuno 627 off my external GPS so that if I am trolling around and I can mark an exact spot to checkout later on. Usually when I am trolling I am driving the boat, sipping a beer and keeping an eye on the rods and could be well past the juicy ground by the time I hit mark on my GPS... there's only so many things a man can do at once.

If you input it while you are out there you only have to change a couple of digits.

And not sure a TZ2 will interface with a 588 either......A Furuno rep told me it will NOT.....it uses a different TLL sentence, you need to use the old dodgy GP1870 GPS........

Wed, 2016-06-15 15:31

My mate had a tz2 and 587 with tm260 in his boat. All talks to each other, hit mark on the sounde it marks

on the GPS, you can split the screen on the Tz2 and have one side sounder one side GPS with the sounder feed coming from the 586 and also has all his engin (115 merc 4st) guages on the GPS if selected

 After playing with my mates

Thu, 2016-06-16 00:32

After playing with my mates tz2 for a few trips they are defiantly a amazing unit! The 3D option on it is bloody good and easier to use than max sea. Looking at the price of a good sounder with a 1kw transducer and a good GPS with a screen big enough to not need a magnifying glass I'd fork out the coin for a tz2 and tm260 over any other combo with the same size screen and features

I am running a Furuno 627 with a Lowrance chartplotter. Not technical but "quest" has made it look easy. Will be giving it a crack. Gotta love this site.

Update

Tue, 2016-08-02 22:07

Thought I would bump this post up with an update.

Just came across this item http://www.mark.fish/ which will apparently connect a Furuno to any GPS.
Also has an option to add a remote mark button anywhere on the boat so you can mark a spot even while your fishing down the back of the boat.

Could be a handy option for those who already have say a 585/588 and a HDS on their boats.

Great idea and I would buy one in a heartbeat if I still had my 587. I only sold it because of the lack of this feature.

Does that mean you can scroll

Does that mean you can scroll back through the depth sounder reading and mark a bombie which you drove over 15-30 seconds prior? This GPS mark will be automatically uploaded to you GPS?

Actually Sort of

Wed, 2016-08-03 17:06

Actually Sort of. You cant scroll back past what is on the screen.
You can however move the cursor over any point on the screen to create a waypoint at that location.
Depending on scroll speds etc it could be 30 seconds or 5 minutes of history.

The guys at Nautek on the east coast have developed this and is going to make thiongs so much easier for those who already have a HDS or similar as a plotter

They sold a whole heap of these at the Sydney boat show over the weekend but is more a recent release so not lots in the market yet

Thanks Tim that is exactly what I would want. As the originator of the post I appreciate your input and research. I was about to wire my 2 units together but this unit would go one step better again. I'm off to Coral Bay next week so will try and get one over before I leave and instal it.

Cheers for all who have contributed to this post.
