Furuno FCV 295 help
Submitted by cahal.dahm on Fri, 2013-05-10 17:57
I am looking at purchasing a Furuno 295 for my new boat (Haines Hunter 680 Patriot), i am after a 2kw for 200khz and 3kw for 38khz.
I am wondering, if anyone is using a Airmar r299 or r399 or any other suggestions?
Also can anyone recommend someone who can install and set up, i am after a flush mount for the screen on the dash and transducer in a wetbox.

Serious setup Cahal.....I looked at an FCV295 but baulked as I could not fit it in the dash of my Boston Whaler, will be a tight fit in the 680? Great sounder though!
I spoke with Rhyss at Taylor Marine, very helpful and knowledgable. Trying to ensure the trannies are in clean water is critical.......and not easy to achieve.

Doesn't the Haines Patriot
have a 3 inch hull ? If it does not sure how a wetbox set will go ? Also looking at pics of the dash, is there enough room for it to be dash mounted ?

Depending on your trailer setup
the R209/R309 aimar (will need someone with loads of experience to install), or you might even go 2 separate transom mount (custom made brackets and fairings), 1 x 2kw 200khz and a 3kw 28khz furuno transducers, I prefer the last option - transom mount
I installed a r299 into a grady white (25mm hull thickness at the stern) and it works very well
I would be speaking with Haines Hunter to see if they know of anyone having installed a wetbox and routing out the thickness of the hull.....scary stuff

3 inch hull will sap power
3 inch hull will sap power big time if shoot thru. I know a lot of the airmar stuff suggests the losses are not that bad but I have read the losses with over 1 inch of fibreglass is an issue, 3 inches would be pretty serious loss even with a badass 3 kw tranny.
You could get someone to rout out 2 inches of the hull and recesss the wetbox down so it only shoots through 1 inch of glass, similar to what the Boston Whale rboys have to do to use shoot thru in the putty boxes, which are solid 3 inches thick. I know a couple of blokes who have done this with M260 trannies in Whalers.
If really serious about getting the best sounding, I would semi pocket mount and wet face, which gets the tranny down an inch or two into the fresh water flow resulting in the best peformance at speed. Massive job but would be awesome, better than full pocketmount which gets near hull surface turbulence but this size tranny could result in pretty dramatic drag on a boat this size.........
Not easy dude.

Sounder/Tranny Help!
cahal ..........Matt M is correct;
I recently purchesed a Haines Patriot 680 from Luke Chivers at Chivers Marine!
I had a Furuno FCV1150 installed on the dash (thanks to Rhyss/Furuno Australia for the deal) and with a slight dash modification it was fitted. This allowed plenty of room on the main facia for my Maxsea Plotter and instruments etc!
I've installed a 3kw 28khz & 2kw 200khz tranny's in a wetbox setup that was custom made in my bilge area!!
It has made no differenece at all when punching through a heavy thich glass hull and I get results =)
Chivers Marine can help you out .....speak to Luke and his guys will get the job done right!!!

Not sure why it would make no
Not sure why it would make no difference.
Furuno themselves are not offering the bottom detection features on the 627 and 587 if you use a through-hull, because it does affect the Q-values.

FCV1150 Set-up!
I know a customer that has the exact same setup as mine and wetfaced ............ same picture as mine so "It has made no differenece at all when punching through a heavy thich glass hull"
I have several mates with the same setup as mine (wetbox) and they are very happy with it also (also punching through very thick glass)!!
I get bottom discrimiation (the proper commercial version) not that I use it, and everything else .....all positives and no negatives.......hense I went with my set-up!!!
Being methodical I did go through many questions with the Furuno commercial tech and Furuno " in the know guys" before making my decission

wow, that is then very impressive
Ryan, do you have 2 single furuno transducers or the airmar r399 ? I'ts clearly the way to go these days with a wetbox then if you can get them in. 3" thick glass, who would have thought.....

trannys!
Hi Dougie,
I have 2 singles, I've installed a 3kw 28khz and a 2kw 200khz tranny's in a wetbox setup that was custom made in my bilge area!!
My results are very good both in the Super Deep and shallows......my mates spin out on my sounder definition both shallow and Super Deep and how clean my screen reads!
I'm very impressed with my Sounder/Tranny setup and it was everthing I wanted and more =)

Cahal, never re-invent the
Cahal, never re-invent the wheel mate. I would copy Ryans setup. No doubt there will be some losses through the hull (my 1 kw is wetpaces and mates same trannie wet box and no doubt there are losses shooting through an inch if glass) but by the sounds of it, the high powered trannies Ryan has and you are looking at punches through it no worries and hard to question Ryans experience with deep dropping.
Wet box much nicer and neater than wetfacing, I think the best option is clear.

just a heads up
Furuno are just one of many marine electronic suppliers. no doublt the furuno setup works but before you run out and spend 30k its worth contacting the local commercial marine suppliers ie TMQ, fremantle marine electronics ect and a find out theres a wolrd of commercial deepwater sounders (which your moving into) which all produce excellent results. When you start exploring you'll find some awsome set ups. JRC, LG, koden, Hondex. The internet and marketing is funny like that, youve got plenty of choices from professionals if you know where to look. If you've got dollars to burn there some amazing gear out there.

Agree with JohnF. There is plenty of furuno gear around and its good shit, plenty of information and experience as well.
Furuno gear wont cost anywhere near 30 grand .
Our 295 and 10 inch navnet with heading sensor, radome and separate furuno 2kw 200 hz, 1 kw 50 hz transducers was just over 16 grand 5 years ago. The trannies are wetboxed just in front of the transom and work really really well.
