Fyfe

Just watching the footy show and saw that not fyfe himself but others were appealing for him to be allowed to go in the running for the brownlow this year. Thoughts?

He should never have been in this position in the first place.
But that said, be surprised if the AFL admit they got it wrong at the start of the season and enter into some sort of compromise.

Nah he's ineligible. They won't change rules this late in the season. But I can just about guarentee the match review panel will be a changed entity next year. They have made some huge blues and it's too bloody complicated. You need to get a calculator out every time someone's reported for a bump to see if they'll go.

Thu, 2014-08-07 22:53

Fyfe will poll the most votes which will be an embarrassmentioned to the MRP and the freo footy club.  I accept his suspension but I can't accept why others buddy goodes and merret get let off.  And the conca get two weeks for a cowardly intentional hit behind play....  The MRP have got it wrong too many other times.  It needs to be changed next year.

Only in the fact that the club decided not to challenge it.  Had the incident not happened so early in the season, and had they seen the incidents that have occurred since without penalty, perhaps that would be a different decision????  I don't know.  They had their reasons.

Fri, 2014-08-08 09:21

I see fyfe's management have threatened to sue the afl if he wins Brownlow. Poor form really he got rubbed out when he shouldn't  have yes but it was a soft coaches decision not to challenge.

It's called the best and fairest and I don't see the need to change the rules for fyfe.

I agree with the points system being part of the problem but disagree with the second bit Gilly. They should take precedence with similar incidents into account as the problem is that there is no consistency from one week to the next.

Fri, 2014-08-08 12:40

Fyfe was at the start of the season which doesn't help but in my mind the inconsistency of the MRP is causing the most angst.
i.e Fyfe and Douglas get done and get weeks off and later in the season other players get off for worse - that is causing fans to question the whole process.

How can Douglas get two weeks for a perfect hip and shoulder (shoulder contacting shoulder) with an "accidental" head clash causing the damage (head to head). The MRP said at the time they have a duty of care to protect the head however later players (roughy and buddy for instance) get nothing when they hip and shoulder with the shoulder making contact to the head.

It's not a good look to challenge it now and fyfe doesn't need that distraction.  Drop it, let him play footy and not worry about it.  Freo need him at is best to go go one better this year.

There is precedents about

Fri, 2014-08-08 10:33

There is precedents about changing decisions, especially with positive drug tests, for example the cyclist Michael Rogers from Oz who tested pos for I think Clembuterol. He was initially banned and then let off for ?contaminated meat eaten in China?

However if this rule was now changes, and Fyfe would be eligible, because it looks like he is going to win, I think it would rate as an "Animal Farm" moment. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

He is young and I fully agree with Randall that it would not be a good look to challenge it now, it would distract him, and Freo needs him more than ever. He wont get the prestige if he won, ineligible and the medal goes to another (probably despite missing games Ablett again) but there is always next year and more.

Changing the rule, stupid that it is will set a precedent, and you might see an eternal legal challenge to decisions in the future to change the rules in cases like this. Footy doesnt need the off field crap and I am sure they would be extremely reluctant to change now.

Maybe if he played for a Victorian club he would have got away with it or if he was an indegenous allstar. It shouldnt even be called the Brownlow as the comp is called the AFL not the VFL.The whole thing needs looking at ,MRP,the way the umps give out the points etc.I rate the players choice for best in the comp over the Brownlow anyway.

If If If only

The AFL only changes things when it suits them, or their pocket. $$$$$. It's tradition the GF is the last saturday in september, unless there is a chance of losing gate or television money. $$$$$.

They won't ban a team for drugs (bringing the game into disrepute) because it will affect the Victorian v non-victorian team balance.  $$$$$..  The Fyfe decision will not be overturned because it will increase the chance of a Victorian browlow win. $$$$$.  Ya kinda get the idea that the AFL revolves around money & everything else (non-victorian) takes a back seat.

I agree, every incident should be judged week by week not on the results of an incident 2 weeks ago. Circumstances will just about always be different in some way & should not be compared to each other.

I would judge the Conca incident worse & more a deliberate act than the Vickery on Cox incident. That was nothing short of assult but maybe the AFL thought that having 2 Richmond (victorian) players out for rough play would look bad.  Who knows how they work.  I just know that the sooner it becomes a TRUE national competition the better, & not an expanded VFL one.

I hope Fyfe polls the most votes, not good for him but hopefully it will expose the inconsistancies of the AFL tribunal & it's sometimes stupid decisions.

My thoughts only.

cheers Rob

I agree with your view 100%, when the AFL brings in the send off rule the game will be much better IMO. The AFL rant on about how they are going to come down on players who do not respect and abide by the rules of the game, and how the keepers of the game (the tribunal) will take a harsh line in protecting players from head injuries, what a crock!!!

From now on I'm going to make damn sure my grand kids don't watch this load of crap on tv whilst they are in my care.

If both the Vickery and conca incidents happened on the streets of Northbridge both the perpetrators of the behind king hits would be serving 12 months as a guest of the state prisons dept (as the should).

Yes I agree with the send off rule

Fri, 2014-08-08 16:54

But 17 vs 18 would be a disaster in football. So would have to allow the sub on. And also would have to have a suspension possible at the end. Otherwise a player could (and would) knowing they are coming off anyway, just target an opposition key player and take him out. But being one player short on the bench is punishment enough. And it would penalize the team greatly.

This would cause a coach to seriously crack down on behaviour that could cause a send off, and spectators would change their mind about players that constantly offend. I am sure poor old hayden ballentyne would go from Hero to goat very fast with a send off rule.

But would hate to be the umpires in this scenario. God help them if they ever send off someone by an error etc.

just my thoughts

Fri, 2014-08-08 18:36

I think there needs to an enqiry in tha afl , teams tanking (my bloody team and they did) , supplements scandel, Nat Fyfe rubbed out for anciental head clash other players getting of if they are a crowd puller or if they are an indiginous all star. The anount of money gambeled on the game these day makes me think somthing stinks about the game seem to remember a couple of years ago a player that usualy plays in the back pocket started in the forward pocket and there was a huge plunge on him to kick the first goal , somthing wrong there , no different to the ARL bloke that delberatly gave away a penitaly in side the first couple of minutes of a game so the opisition could score first (luckly that was caught)
but so many dodgy things happen you start to wonder if our great game is straight , i just hope it is

The Brownlow is just a Victorian wankfest .. about the only good thing about it is seeing the wags with their puppies out ..

The MVP award has alot more credibility by being voted by their peers and that trophy should take precedence in our national comp .

Fyfe was reported 17 rounds ago , out of contention .. I’m thinking that would also affect the umps voting him from that point anyway .
