Gar fish?
Submitted by tcarroll on Wed, 2023-08-23 08:58
Was over on the west side (Exmouth) swimming with the family the other day and an old couple next to us were slaying what looked like gar fish, but from a distance the fish looked to have black bars/splodges on their side. Anybody know what type of gars these are? Went through the Fish ID page but couldn't find them.

Robust
Robust Garfish have a dark spot just below the dorsal fin, not evident enough to see from a distance though I wouldn't have thought. They also have a longer lower tail lobe than southern gar. Think they are also called storm garfish??

Just did a google search
Gooled "gar fish with black spots" and found a picture of some bait that looked the same. Looks like they are possibly known as 5 spot gar.... I'll try and catch one next time I am over there and get a picture. Looked like good fun for the daughter!
