But, off beaches further north, having two hooks on snoods in front of the float works best for me. The float is on the very end of the line, small hooks on droppers spread out 350-400 mm further up the line, use a very slow retreive. You feel the bites rather than just watch the float, and the hookup rate seems a lot better.

When I was a kid I used a 1.5-2m trace with a longshank, wire berley cage above with a float above that (sometimes no float, depended on how they were biting) and a maggot as a bait, sometimes hellllll tiny bits of prawn or squid. It's been years since I caught one of them !

Been a while since I’ve targeted them , we mixed up a bit of dough with some fish oil kept it in a sandwich bag and place little balls on long shanked hooks and it done the trick .. for whatever reason the bigger gars seemed to be always at the back of the pack . Maggots would be the go if the mrs lets you keep them in the freezer

just what 420casts has said above.   Caught heaps with that exact rig.  Also suggest try Chris Raffs bait technique.  I've used that same ...dough from plain flour mixed with a tin of sardines ....

Gamakatsu Octopus size 10 hook - might need to buy online as they can be tricky to get hold of , they are a short shank and you will need long nose pliers to get them out but hook up rates go through the roof when using them.

plenty of burley and a fish-oily rag on a rope to keep up the trail - float size will be dependant on casting distance required and how much wave action - SMALL pieces of prawn or Maggots are good.

We catch a lot for Marlin/Sails and in a 1-2 hour session have to keep count because between 2 or 3 of us we can easily get our limit - the Gamakatsu octopus hooks and keeping bait size down is the key.
