Garden Island restrictions

How close are you allowed to take your boat to Garden Island. Being a naval base I assume there are restricted areas. Does anyone know of any sites that show the restricted areas?
I'm interested in fishing the eastern side of the island. Any information on what species I could realistically expect to catch would also be appreciated.
Thanks.

Marine Charts
Clearly show the restricted (no go) areas, and that still leaves plenty of area to fish. You are NOT permitted to land on the island after sunset or before dawn.
Plenty of squid over the weedbeds and if you find nice sandy holes within those beds there are usually plenty of herring, gardies and some size kg whiting as well as the usual pesky bycatch. Trolling with small lures will get you pike on a regular basis.
Hope this helps

My marine chart does show an
My marine chart does show an area around the whole island marked as naval waters, although because you are allowed to access some of the island during the day, the entire island surrounds cannot be restricted.

Eastern side...
roughly right in the middle of the island is ok to fish/land on beach. The southern area is obviously no go...where the actual base is...and the northeastern section (there's a jetty there) is also off limits. I believe the cut off point is sulphur rock...can't land north of there or approach within 200 metres. Was wondering why the herring/tailor were suddenly so easy to catch one day and then got told off by some guys in a ute to bugger off!

1km exclusion zone from the
1km exclusion zone from the main naval jetties and moorings in careening bay. There is big triangle shaped nav marks that mark the excl area...(best squid spot just inside, but beware the pimple faced 15 year old "skipper" with a blue flashing light and an inflated ego)...just adds to the excitement i reckon...hah hah hah
