Jurien Bay - Jig or bait?
Submitted by dant on Wed, 2013-05-22 11:56
Gday All,
Looks like we might be heading up to a mates holiday house in Jurien over the long wk end, will be taking the tub up there - it will be my first time up there but just reading some threads looks like there is plenty of good ground around Jurien, its just a matter of having a look around on the sounder.
What do you think will work more effective - baits or Jigs?
Thanks again any help is appreciated.
Cheers Dan

jigs - only jigs
jigs - only jigs
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

i went out with whitey on
i went out with whitey on seasport last year took some plastics with me expecting to mainly use bait. Once we were out there boy was it a different story used plastics for the whole time we were out there and cleaned up compared to the guys using bait. got around 6 snapper and 3 big dhu's.
What i would do if i were you is use both see which one is working best and stick with it. Mind you with working jigs you just have to be persistent, it pays off definitely alot more rewarding pulling something up on jigs with light gear rather then winching fish up on baits.
Good things come to those who bait

I reckon if you are serious
I reckon if you are serious about getting good at catching fish on jigs, then rather than take jigs and bait and see what works best, you leave the bait at home.
When you start out jigging you won't get a heap of fish at first. If you have bait on the boat, then after a while you'll get frustrated, revert to bait, and never improve at jigging.
If on the other hand you go out with only jigs and put the whole day(s) into it, then it won't be long until you get a few fish, perfect your technique, then never look back.

I have been using both Jigs/Plastics and bait
out from Jurien over quite a few trips and at the same time Eg fishing 2 rods with one in the holder with the plastic,(Z-Man's for me)and letting the boat movement do the work. The last 2 Dhuies caught were on the plastic..
I've spent half my life fishing.. The other half I have wasted..

I also leave a zman rigged up and leave in the rod holder, but my other rod is rigged with a plastic too lol. Do you leave the big grubz in the rod holder? Those big pig tails are dynamite

so it was 3.5m swell tough
so it was 3.5m swell tough going at that height even in his 60 footer. First stop for livies and they werent playing the game first spot i think 1 big baldie caught and little else of note breakseas, blackarse scorpion fish and sgt baker was pretty quiet first few hours but come approx 11 fish came on the bite and eventually got our limit of demersals. I lost a couple of decent fish however had the tussle of my life for about 20mins fighting a 20+kg Amberjack that had me stuffed after that, never felt a fish with such power and stamina more power then samsons by far. At one of the last stops another guy got bricked on something big after a 5min fight then as always Whitey topped everyone with a massive Dhuie on jig after not catching anything all day. Was very trying conditions but by the end of the day everyone was happy all were fishing bait with 24oz lead bringing them up was a effort in itself. Pix on the seasport facebook Richo the deckie holding up my AJ.
Cheers.

JB Mackies....
They're still around, Dant. I finally joined the club on Saturday with a 15kg example. :) CD18 Blue Sardine in around 15metres of water.
As Beau said, troll along out the back of the breakers past Seaward and the Boomer, I had a couple of hits in the area (after I caught my first elsewhere), but lost due to using braid (no stretch), and lost a hookup after around 8 - 10 seconds as I put the 37kg braid on the Tyrnos 50 to work so pulled the hooks. I've since read that you should give it it's first run of around 100 - 150 metres, then start applying some more pressure, not too much at first. They're not dirt fighters unlike Kingys that will brick you at every opportunity.
Sounds like you're new to the area, in which case, play it safe and take the north passage - follow the leads past the dog leg in the leads before heading directly South behind the breakers. I've been fishing there pretty regularly since September and have seen waves in the distance come out of now where, where previously there was nothing (it only takes one). That, plus the number of even experienced guys without local knowledge being swamped by a "freak wave" and losing their tub is scary.
Hopefully the holiday house has a sea chart so you can familiarise yourself with the are and what I've mentioned, before you hit the water. If it doesn't, suggest it to your mate. Our house has, and it is very much appreciated by all that stay there.
If you do hook up on the troll, don't call it for a Mack too early, there are always plenty of sambos in the area, and are a few YT Kings too.
Hope the weather Gods are looking favourably upone you, as I have friends staying in our house on the long weekend, and they deserve decent weather as the were in Exmouth a few weeks ago when it was blowing its arse off!

thanks heaps craig for the info - its appreciated, i might give the trolling ago out the back, mackie would be fantastic.
I have heard you need to keep your wits about you when up in Jurien, and will be definately take the north passage out, i have the way points out of there and the navionics map is also assisting me.
At the moment the weather gods are looking ok - the swell looks down but the easterly is up a bit.

No probs Dant...
And don't put your faith just in Seabreeze for the weather - it can be a bit optimistic at times. I normally look at Central West (on Seabreeze) and split between Geraldton and Lancelin forecast, although JB tend to be closer to Lancelin for it's weather.
Always check the official BOM Marine forecast for the area too - it may be a little on the pessimistic side (and only covers 3 days) but better to be safe than sorry. You can see it here: http://www.bom.gov.au/wa/forecasts/geraldton-coast.shtml
Have a great time!
