Severe Weather Warningfor
Severe Weather Warning
for destructive winds
for people in the Central West, Lower West, South West, South Coastal, South East Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt forecast districts
Issued at 4:43 pm WST on Sunday 22 September 2013.
For people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay. This includes people in, near, or between the following towns: Jurien Bay, York, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Southern Cross, Narrogin, Katanning, Albany, Esperance, Mandurah and the Perth metropolitan area.
Weather Situation
A deep low and associated very strong cold front will move over the southwest of the state late this evening and early Monday morning, producing a prolonged period of very windy conditions.
The cold front is likely to cause WIDESPREAD DANGEROUS WINDS in excess of 125 kilometres per hour that could result in SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. Dangerous winds are likely to develop southwest of a line from Perth to Albany between 8pm and 11pm and extend to south of a line from Jurien Bay to Southern Cross to Norseman to Israelite Bay between midnight and 5am Monday. Conditions will ease from the west during Monday morning.
The windiest conditions for the Perth metropolitan area are expected between 11pm and 5am.
HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may cause FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS between Perth and Esperance. DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS are likely which could cause SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION.
This front is expected to produce dangerous weather that is only seen once every 3 to 4 years in the southwest of WA.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
