Getting to Muiron Islands - Help/Advice Appreciated!

Hi All (especially Exmouth peeps!)

Been planning at a 2 week trip up to Exmouth/Coral Bay in May and have hit a snag with my plans to camp on the Muiron Islands for 3days 2nights as hire boats legally have to be on a trailer overnight. The initial plan was to hire 2 x 6m boats, (5 per boat), bring/tow along 2-4 kayaks & stay for 3 days on Muiron Island paradise (weather permitting).

Revised Plan(s):

(OPTION 1) Pay a fishing/dive charter to do island transfers – preferably a larger boat that can take everyone+kayaks in one go? I’ve chatted to Josh @ onstrike and he was very helpful, but I’m aware that May is a busy season for the charters and wouldn’t want any of the guys to lose 2 days of full work to take us over

(OPTION 2) Pay someone privately with a large enough boat to do a couple of trips there and back + tow a tinny? Happy to pay a local or fishwrecked member who is keen...PM your contact details & asking price!

If any locals or otherwise can suggest another contact or another solution to the problem that would be much appreciated!!

PS: I’m fully aware of all paperwork/approvals/restrictions for staying on the Islands and have already made contact with DEC to ensure everything is legit.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Justin

 Hi Shark1, i think it's more

Fri, 2013-08-30 08:41

Hi Shark1, i think it's more a legal requirement for them as a boat hire company...i know I probably couldve done the sneaky thing but i'd rather be upfront about what our plans ;)

apparently exmouth boat hire's 6m boats are allowed to go to the Islands, the only issue is not being able to keep them there overnight..

Charters

Fri, 2013-08-30 09:52

My business partner owns one of the dive/whale shark charter operations in Exmouth. I would be happy to give you his number (PM me) if you are serious about that option, but as you said, it is the high season and I suspect you would need to be prepared to pay the equivalent rate that a boat load of whale shark watchers/divers brings in. Going rate for a whale shark tour is now about $350-400/hd, with 15-20 on the boat, so that adds up fast. There would be some minor savings as he wouldn't have to supply a full crew or catering, but it still wouldn't be cheap. And for him (or any charter operator) to block out 2 days for you I suspect you would be asked to pay upfront and probably not be refundable if you suddenly pulled out as they would be forgoing prime tourist season income to service your needs.

 thanks makai, yeah we'd have

Fri, 2013-08-30 13:06

thanks makai, yeah we'd have no probs paying upfront etc..I'd just be more concerned of the risk of the charter boat (understandably) cancelling on us because they have a full boat of people.

cheers for the offer though, I might be in touch closer to the date.

if you were going to do it

Fri, 2013-08-30 10:03

if you were going to do it the charter boat way, why would you need to block out 2 days?
No reason it couldn't be done early morning or early evening after whale shark tour is done?

Good bit of extra loot on the side without foregoing other work.
Bit over an hour each way and an hour there-only need daylight for the drop off/pick up?

My guess is hiring for 2 full days would require deep pockets

With most of the boats operating out of

With most of the boats operating out of Tantabiddi, I suspect fitting in a trip to the Murions before or after a whale shark tour is a big ask - but only way to find out is make enquiries.

true-didn't think of that.

true-didn't think of that. Ive only skippered them from CB not Exmouth.
But Id imagine not all the charter boats are doing whale shark tours?

haha i would jarrid, but I've had a "make it happen" attitude drilled into me at work...potentially even from a older grey-haired manager I once had :P

 OPTION 3: Hire 6m boat +

Fri, 2013-08-30 13:09

OPTION 3: Hire 6m boat + skipper from Exmouth Boat Hire for 2 days (there + back) and get them to shuttle us back and forth...

looking like the most probable option!

Thanks for everyone's help and comments so far :)

Option 4

Fri, 2013-08-30 13:14

Jus,

How about you guys pay for the hire boat for the time you're there, I'll come up and use the boat ferry you and yours back and forth on the days you want to travel and fish out of it whilst your not using it?

That way you have a landbased support on hand if needed, the boats on the trailer every night and you stick to your original costing....

Obviously there's some legal requirements aaround the paperwork but I'm sure that can be sorted out.

PM if you're interested.

Cheers

Mike

from memory going back a few years was only told had to launch at the marina boat ramp . any prop , motor damage (from too shallow water) was payable but at the same time didn't ask or thought of staying at the islands

out of curiousity how did

out of curiousity how did they sink it?
A 7 meter boat normally should handle 25 knots without any problems other than the comfort factor, even with relatively inexperienced drivers-usually the discomfort would put off the average gumby anyhow?

we got stuck in some pretty

Sun, 2013-09-01 10:24

we got stuck in some pretty savage weather in it and handled it really well going with and against it . across was a different story as with most boats . not sure on the true name for them but it had trim tabs on the back which even in dead calm water could put a decent change in direction and lean when used wrong which would be my guess unless they found some shallow reef thats got a good wreck on it now :)

piece of crap

Sun, 2013-09-01 16:22

that 7m jackman was a piece of crap  it's more use as a reef now, we hired it last year, it guzzled fuel over 12kts

it was badly maintained and handled like a dog, they did the hire people a favour sinking it!
