Glue on mono to braid joints?

For a joint, I think I have the hang of the Albright on braid end, and a uni for the other, bit some people mention smoothing the knot witrh glue, just they dont mention what?  Is superglue appropriate for this, or should I get something else?

not a lot of need

If you have tied your knots well and used appropriate leaders then you should have no probs. I have never lost a fish using Back to Back uni knots in light gear as a result of the knot pulling, but I have had a few albrights pull through when casting a lot, switched to the GT knot or the braid leader know with a bimini for these situations and no probs and no glue.

In the early days braid was very limp and would easily change profile and thus slip, so the SOP was to used cyno or superglue to lock the knot.  Most if not all the braid available today have a more consistant profile and are able to hold knots without glue.

Yeah I dont really expect

Yeah I dont really expect the gluing is to assure the knot's strength, merely to help it through the guides. That is one of the reasons I posted, superglue seems very thin for something that might help with that problem really.

superglue

whilst carp fishing in the UK we always used superglue on the knots just to stop any slippage

Try using a tiny bit of Rubber Cement, found in puncture repair kits. Bonus is that it is flexable.

Cyanoacrylate (superglue) does not bond at all with polyethylene (braid). Polyethylene is where "PE" comes from.

Thats right.  In the old

Thats right.  In the old days, where the profile was softer, the CA soaks in to the weave and that locked the knot.

All Gel Spun Polyethylene (Braid) have a coating on it that wont allow most things to stick to it.

I still have some of the the first GSP released - very different from what is available today.

The PR connection, two

The PR connection, two things

1) the bobbin, Ive only ever noticed on on ebay and it was a very silly amount of money; http://tinyurl.com/24e8vk

2) that lighter near the mono, it scares me so

I think Ill stick to (unglued) albright to uni!

Braid Glue

Sat, 2008-03-22 11:15

I found model plane glue better than superglue......yes I do it to flatten the knot so it passes through the guides easier...and no my knots dont often fail....just blow out from wear at the albright knot "hinge"

the bobin are available from good tackle shops which sells fly gear....ask for a fly tiers bobbin.....I use one rod building....

For the loop in the running

Sun, 2008-04-06 05:50

For the loop in the running line (PE braid) I use a Bimini 40turn knot and the faintest touch of a high tech glue* on the locking knot.

Use, an 8,10 or 12 turn Albright to join the leader to the Bimini loop - no glue and no locking knot (in all my tests and in use the leader has always broken away from the Albright knot).

I also Albright the leader to single strand wire just bending the wire 'back on itself' to form an open loop.

If I had concerns regarding the Albright getting knocked about during sustained casting I would use something like Pliobond (a flexible fly-fishing knot locker) or Starbrite liquid whipping (a paint-on plastic type rope finisher).

Thinking fast forward - how about a short length of small diameter shrink tube?

Knot

Mon, 2008-04-07 13:39

What about a bimini and GT knot , I have never had a GT knot bust on me allways at the bimini and thats after a hell of a lot of pressure placed on the line , I use the GT in all my braids from 4 lb bream gear with 6/ 8/ 10 lb leaders  up to 120 lb braid and 200lb+ leaders

Best thing would be to learn a couple of good knots and learn to tie them in the dark and then you will trust them to the max , my main 3 knots I use are bimini's in both braid and mono then a gt knot for leader connection then a uni knot to connect to either swivel split ring or to the lure / jig etc .

Back in the 70's we use to do plaits etc for doubles , now there is a knot to not learn !!!

The albright seems ok in

Mon, 2008-04-07 19:32

The albright seems ok in light stuff, but I think I need to learn the gt for heavier stuff, if my brother ever finishes his damn boat.
