calculating spool capacity?

Hi,

not to sure there is an easy answer here, but someone doubtless knows more about this problem than I!

If I have a spool rated as follows;

Line Capacity(# Test/yd) 12/240, 14/190, 20/120

If I was going to put 150m 10lb or 12lb braid on, but a long mono backing underneath, how do I work out how much mono to put on first? Well, apart from the obvious hard way =)

I hear baitcasters are the way to really  make a mess on the beach, so how would I assure myself of adequate tension when spooling the line, just make sure the rod is bent over when I do it?

i would run about 170 of 12lb backing then fill her up with braid ... wont hurt a bait caster to be a little under filled and leave a little room for casting leader ... as for tention - wind the nylon on reasonably tight (so you cant compress it if you squeze it on the spool) with the braid wind it on nice and tight (dont use the rod) just run it though a glove or a damp rag ... your better off letting someone at a tackle shop do this really as a line winder will take seconds to do what takes 30 minutes by hand .. plus if they stuff up the backing they get to fix it :)

Haha, I did think about getting a shop to do it.

*but*

there is that thread where someone is grizzling about a lousy job an unnamed shop did spooling his new reel and my brother got the shaft the same way at another unnammed shop. They may just be unlucky though =)

 Ta for the reply,

Two spools.

Till, I don't no if I am stating the obvious here and that is what you are talking about when you say "apart from the obvious hard way =)"
If you have a spare or loan spool or spare reel you simply wind the braid onto your spare or loan spool until you run out of braid, then join your backing to the end of the braid and carry on winding the backing on top of your braid until it reaches the top of your spool as required, then you simply wind it off the spool onto the spool that you are going to fish with and it goes onto the spool in reverse leaving the braid on the top and level.
It is far better to let your tackle shop do it as they will have a spare spool, the equipment and the know-how to do a better job than you or I!

I could have kicked myself for being stupid when I first saw it do in my tackle shop.

Hi Ya, Similar idea to

Hi Ya,

Similar idea to Farflung's but you need 2 large capacity spools (empty) that you but line on.

First - Wind all of your braid onto the reel, join on hte backing and fill the spool.

Second - Jerry rig up a large capacity line spool onto your electric drill.  One with variable speed is good.  Wind all the line from your reel to your spool.  You now have all teh backing at the bottom and braid on top.

Third - jerry rig up you second large capacity spool onto you drill and transfer teh line from the first spool to the secong spool.  You now have all the braid on the bottom and backing on top.

Last - Wind all the line onto your reel.  Job done.

Cheers.
