Good Day Off Cape Nat
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2011-07-17 20:46
Got out for a fish today off Cape Nat. Had a funny drift going to start the day. Wind coming from the NE and we where drifting in a northerly direction.
Day started off very slow with only a few small fish caught and me dropping a really good fish.
Wasn't to about 1.30 that we managed to find a few decent sizes dhuys.
Total for the day was 10 dhuys ranging from 43cm to 100cm and one breaksea cod.
My best for the day caught on a pearl McArthy plastic.
Dave with a nice dhuy caught on a 11" McArthy plastic.
Another one for me caught on a Caprice jig.

Great day there. Did you
Great day there. Did you happen to weigh the biggest Dhuie? Just trying to get a rough weight range of a 1m long Dhuie?

The 1m dhuie was roughly
The 1m dhuie was roughly 16kg. The Dhuy in the last photo was 97cm and felt a lot heavier. Wasn't weighed because it was quickly tagged and released.
Jeff most were caught on metal jigs. Once we knew they where on the bite we swapped from plastics to metals. Plastics are better in my opion if the fish aren't aggressively feeding but when they are metal jigs work great and are a lot more fun than the plastics. Fish seem to hit metals jigs a lot harder than the plastics.

Well done, top effort! Agree
Well done, top effort! Agree with Lamby that bottom pic is a awesome POTM contender. Put it on the 'Brag Board' as I think that's the only way to be in contention for POTM.

The fish was brought up
The fish was brought up extremely slowly knowing it was to be released. I think the great colours indicate its healthy condition.

I have been mainly using a 2
I have been mainly using a 2 or 3oz jig head, fishing between 40 and 60m. The last few months I have been using the McArthy bullet heads. Little bit more expensive but the hooks are great.
I have been using the same 3oz jig head for 3 months now. Very rarely loose them so prepared to pay the extra. I just give the hook a bit of a sharpen before each time I use it. I find they sharpen really good with a small sharpening stone.
Not a fan of the Nitro style jig heads. I have had a poor hook up rate using them. I think the loose hook doesn't set as well, especially using light rods.
