GoPro HD cameras

Hi, I have discovered the Go Pro HD camera on the net with the intention of diving with it and maybe even straped to the front of my 4x4 etc and for the prices it looks awesome. It claims to be 60m waterproof.... Has anyone got any experience with them???

yep ive got one. Awesome

yep ive got one. Awesome little cameras, but make sure you have an up to date pc or mac, or its pretty much useless.. I have a laptop thats only 2 years old, and have to upgrade it. I havent been able to edit any video or even watch it on the laptop..  Probably get a mac which is going to cost around $2,500.. The camera doesnt come with any software at all so thats more stuff you have to worry about, the camera doesnt float, but you will be diving so thats not realy an issue if it comes off.. If you have facebook join the Gopro page, they have heaps of info on there and a huge gallery of photo's. I posted a thread in the brag board last week, "more tailor from the ski", the photos on there are from the gopro. Definately buy overseas you'll save alot of money. Just remembered my avatar is taken from the gopro too..

Do you know what's stopping

Fri, 2011-01-28 21:41

Do you know what's stopping it from working on older computers? Downloading VLC can fix most codec problems.

As for aiming, there's another brand camera that looks like a tube which rotates and has two lasers for aiming and leveling. The tube shape works well for helmets but the gopro works better in some other situations.

Do any of the cameras support continuous recording? Ie recording all the time in a loop then when you press record it goes from the last 10 seconds. Not sure how well it'd work with the gopro as I heard only 2 hrs recording? (and can't change battery in the field)

i dont know too much about

i dont know too much about this stuff but i think coz its full 1080p HD you need a fair bit of ram and a half decent video card.. Aiming is fine with it in my opinion.. Gopro are now selling the skeleton housing, where there are holes in the housing where you can plug into the camera, this way you can plug an external charging device into the camera so you can film and charge at the same time, maybe useful when on a boat etc. not so useful underwater haha

I also have one of these they are great and well worth the money. Only one down side for me is the lack of a veiw finder. I often put mine on a Paternoster rig and send it down with the baits and get some amazing footage of the fish and the bottom where im fishing right through to 40M. They have so many uses. Get all the attachments as well like the suction cup, head mount etc, well worth it

just be careful apparently

just be careful apparently the housing that comes with it does not allow the lens to focus underwater.

eyeofmine.com do a modified housing for underwater use but it voids your warranty if it leaks. I've seen a few photos and vids and they look awesome, it would make a great grab and go camera that you can drop, get wet etc. Plus it saves buying a fish eye lens for the SLR if that's your thing.

I am going to get one myself and attach it to the rocket launcher in my boat for marlin fishing deck action shots. I reckon 99% would be of nothing but the few that do work will be gold.

I've been doing some searching on the 'net butr most are going to cost $300ish posted from O/S. Where are the cheapest you've found to buy them from?

yeh i think im gonna get meself one of these babies for some spearing action..... agree with tim - 90% of the stuff probably useless but the 10% that work is gonna look wild! cant wait

interesting about the software upgrades etc tho and the problems focusing? might have to look into that

hey scottland, you will notice when you are looking at buying  this camera that they come in packages, Naked is the basic package, i think it might come with the housing and thats all, I bought the Surf Hero, which comes with a mount for the camera to attatch to a surfboard and the housing, the cameras are all the same, just the accessories that are included are different

The Hero and the Wide are

Fri, 2011-01-28 16:30

The Hero and the Wide are different cameras. Hero is the newest and films in HD while the Wide is the old camera and only films in Standard Definition.. The GoPro is useless underwater IF you are taking PHOTOS, the auto focus just doesnt work at all, but ive got snorkelling HD footage and its perfectly fine! I wish i could upload some of my videos just to show you! You also have to remember because this is a fish eye lens, its realy only good for filming things close to the camera.. Trying to film things that are far away dont realy show to clearly at all.. This is just my opinion from the experiences ive had with the GoPro Hero..

With the jet boat footage, would have been great having 2 GP Hero's - 1 mounted on the targa bar looking forward and the 2nd mounted on a front bow rail facing back onto the passengers..
