GoPro Tips?

Hi All ...

Just got my new toy, the new GoPro Hero2, the "outdoor" package, c/w the 32GB card. I'll mainly use it for Fish photos (on the boat), and possibly some boat side shoots underwater (if I sort out a mono pod for it).

Any tips on configuration, quality improvement ... etc?

Cheers

Hesh

You'll need a flat lens

Thu, 2012-05-31 09:58

You'll need a flat lens housing if you want clear underwater photo/video. Other than that not much else you can improve lol.
I've got a wicked video made up from my albany trip, hopefully can upload it next week sometime :)

hi Mela,

i have the same, but lost it after my first dive in the river...smar one aye.

if your taking underwater footage get a flat lens, this allows for better focusing and eliminates vignette(?) or something.

gopro have just released its own casing otherwise a flat lens can be had for about 30 bucks or so.

as for monopot, buy the tripod adaptor and modify some pvc pipe i have a diy saved at home somwhere, waiting for my replacement to arrive

Mountings

Thu, 2012-05-31 10:06

I have mine mounted on the top of the rail on the center console. Works great as you can get some great footage going through the seas on the way out and if we are trawling then it is just a matter of flipping it around so it faces backwards. Means if you go on strike you dont have to worry about it and can focus on bringing in the fish. Plus it is always nice having it mounted somewhere so that even when not in use it cant get bashed or lost.

Headmount is great for fishing too. You can use the rollbar mount to mount it to nets and gaffs for cool footage. Possibilities are pretty much endless :)

Gopro

Check out snake river prototyping for flat lenses, filters and other things. Great site. I have the flat lense housing from them and a few filters, I also use the underwater dive tray for mounting the gopro on with lighting. As for editing I use power director, pretty easy to use. Just make sure whatever your running your editing on has enough juice to handle it all. Have fun with it mate.

Beau - cheers mate; I'm also planning on using iMovies on Mac. Headmount - basically that's the main reason for buying the outdoor edition, as it come with the head strap .... I opt that this is one of the best options.

Sammy - how you doin mate ... no worries mate, this post is for everone to benefit from. As mentioned, I'm planning on using iMovie as well.

Tigh - thanks for the lead mate, I'll certainly check them out.

Imovie is great unless you want to get real technical with your editing, its so easy to use. My albany clip was supposed to be a highlight clip but ended up being 15mins long haha

Just watch the head strap

Thu, 2012-05-31 13:46

Just watch the head strap underwater.... I have heard of a few coming off and never to be seen again.... Might also pay to get a 'floaty' it is a fluro covered bit of foam that sticks to the back of your housing and floats ( obviously) If you are going to be taking photos the LCD screen might be a good investment also. Beau is right Sammy, just got to have plenty of go in your computer or laptop to even just watch footage. They are plenty of fun and the quality of the footage is great. Have fun with time lapse, got a great one last week when we were up at Steep Point. I will try and get some stuff up here.

Been thinking about using the headmount when we are out towing on the ski, will probably use a wire trace with snap swivels to lanyard it to my wetsuit zipper, the best thing I can think of lol

Thu, 2012-05-31 14:30

You can setup the gopros to turn on to different modes. E.g. you may prefer it to be on photos or video when you first start up. Also, you can set it for "one touch" so when you press the button, it turns on and then starts taking video without having to press a button after it turns on to start recording.

Great point this is - when you set it up for the 1 Touch option!

I just wish there was a "one touch turn off" too. You have to hold it down 3 seconds to turn it off instead of just pressing once (would be nice to have the option).

I guess they did it like that

Thu, 2012-05-31 18:48

I guess they did it like that to reduce the amount of buttons used in the camera - remember this same button got different (on push) functions.

I meant it would be nice to be able to set it up tojust press the button to turn it off, rather than have to press and hold it for 3 seconds. E.g. press the top button to turn on and record, press again to stop recording and turn off. You still have the other button needed for other functions anyways.

Ah ok ...

Another thing that happened with me when I did put it on that option (1 Touch), is that it froze! And it kept on dioing that for few mins after!! I had to take the battery out to reset it, and even then, it starts on the same option, and couldn't turn it off.

Happened with anyone before?

 Grab some anti mist spray

Fri, 2012-06-01 18:04

Grab some anti mist spray same stuff you use on dive mask for housing.

In high humidity areas they have tendencies to fog up.
