GoPro WiFi Underwater use

I think I saw a post where someone said they were going to try towing a GoPro + WiFi unit behind a boat to watch live footage of fish striking lures on an iPad with the GoPro app.

I thought this sounded like a great idea but wasn't sure if it would work so I emailed GoPro. They just replied to say it won't transmit underwater.

Just letting anyone that ight have been intending to purchase it with the same intention.

Cheers,

Smez.

 NOOOOOOOOOOO

I might borrow one to test off a mate before purchasing then. I wanted to drop it below my kayak in my favourite spots to see what sort of ground i am fishing on, any fish around etc.

Only in about 5 metres of water.

5m?

I can put it this way, microwaves, that heat food up, run on about 2.4ghz. Expect zero penetration.

Guys that do point to point microwave links can't penetrate trees well, and they are only partially water.

I'd say it will work - my WiFi package (bacpac and RC) are on the way, and will put it to test.

I realise that it will be

Wed, 2012-10-17 21:00

I realise that it will be restricted, but being that the WIFI remote is supposedly rated to 180 metres (I assume the streaming is the same?) surely it can make it 5 metres through the water...

Only found one first hand report on the net so far which said it worked 6foot under the water. This to me is an indication to give it a good red hot go.

Air doesn't absorb the signal

Air doesn't absorb the signal though.

Bit like saying a rocket can go to mars, but why can't can't I fire it to the centre of the earth, after all, its closer.

 Won't work, RF doesn't

Thu, 2012-10-18 21:39

Won't work, RF doesn't travel through water very well. Need low freqs and huge power, 2.4ghz without directional antennas in water, buckleys!

tried

Tim, I personally tried this about a month ago and as soon as the gopro hits the water the wifi signal drops out.

Just means you need to sift through hours of footage to find the fish on your footage ;)

It's a no go

Fri, 2013-01-18 10:43

Yep can also confirm it doesn't work. Was gonna try attach one to a crab pot so we could see when there were crabs in it but didn't even get 20cm deep before it cut out.

works with underwater wifi cable

Sun, 2016-03-27 10:52

So I did some tests and got it working using an underwater wifi cable from CamDo.

www.cam-do.com/collections/underwater/products/underwater-wifi-extension-cable

Good thing is that you can just attach the end above water somewhere on the boat - the WiFi signal was pretty strong so could connect my smartphone to the camera using the GoPro app with no dramas. Then you can live preview or control the camera if you need to using the app.

I like the crab pot idea, will give that a go.

 Per above, doesn't go far

Sun, 2016-03-27 12:01

Per above, doesn't go far under. Wanted to use it to check for damage on the boat and wouldn't go far down. Had to take video and download from the card.
