Gorilla-pod slr

Picked up one these great little inventions whilst I was recently in Perth.
Should be great for wrapping around bars in the boat (rocketlauncher) to take self timer pics as well as live record fishing action on the deck of the boat while fishing, trolling etc.
Cost $69.95 from Camera House in the Hay St Mall.
Saves the problem of putting a fixed mount in place. I'll review it after I've used it a bit.

They're not bad
For small compacts they're not too bad..
Light weight and quick and easy to set up.
For an SLR I would be personally look at using a Manfrotto Magic Arm and Super Clamp, or a Super Clamp with a ball head..
The advantage of using a magic arm is you can move the camera to shoot just outside the boat if required (recommend having a safety cable attached to the camera), take it up higher above the rocket launcher, or even shoot from ground level if req'd.
We use these for mounting remote cameras at the cricket and basketball...
They don't really cost too much and keep your cameras fixed in place !
cheers,
Paul

Manfrotto
Thanks for that Kaney.
Be interesting to see how the gorilla pod goes.
Good tip about the safety lanyard, I'll get a couple organised.

saftey cables
No worries Big John...
For the safety cables use the smallest guage s/s wire rope avail.
For use on a boat, you could probably get away with a heavy trace !
I get mine (wire rope) cut to size at Whitworths and crimp them instore with a loop at either end and use a small caribiner buckle. Better to safe than sorry when mounting gear up in ceilings and behind a glass backboard. Last thing you want is for a camera to come crashing down and clout someone !
If you can source a stainless key ring your laughing... attach this to your camera body at the point of where the strap goes thru - then thread the safety line thru the ring.
cheers,
Paul
