GPS Antenna

Just curious if anyone has tried placing their boat GPS antenna in a shoot thru the windscreen position just like a car based GPS.

If so did it pick up the satellites ok or was it a drop in/drop out type of reception?

Just looking to save myself some drilling and cable running.

John

if your talking about the antenna for the lowrance john,i found it not as good, the lower in the boat i put it the poorer reception, best bet i found is to have the gps powered up and plug in the antenna and set it to the satelitte page, move it around and watch the changes this way you will find the best spot, mine was ontop of my rocket launcher, tried other places to make less drilling less wires etc, and not very good reception.

Good idea about powering it up Mako. I'll try that when the rain buggars off and I get a chance to install it.

Mines mounted flush on the dash John. Shoots thru the windscreen and have never had an issue or lost reception.

Saying that if I had a rocket launcher when I put it in I would have probably mounted it on to of that

I have the Lowrance antenna mounted on the dash and have had the odd dropout on occasions. Bloody annoying when you are trying to find your spots!! Funnily enough always seems to happen when I'm in the same area.

Cheers

Make sure the back of your sounder/gps unit isnt pointing at the antenna too. Mine was originally set up like that and still wouldn't get a lock in a centre console!

Mate shoots his through the screen of his Assasin with no problems. Another tried with his Trailcraft and no luck. Got mine mounted in front of the screen with no drama.
