Id say ideally every 6 months

I used to not practice what i preached and do it before a long trip or once a year (maybe)....

Now I use a special type lubricant i dont think you can get here in Aus, I dont have to bother changing it, I just make sure the bearing buddies are full.

Get rid of the rollers

And get teflon slides, they provide much more support for the boat and require no maintenance

With regards to the bearings

I will change mine every twelve months.
Learnt how to change them last weekend. We cleaned out all the old grease with fuel. Worked well.

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

Bearing Buddies

regularly topped up ensures no air and a continuous supply of fresh grease, and, like Rodrat I change out the bearings every year because the boat is heavy even on dual axle and the bearings face a continual static load when parked.

Yearly

But make sure the bearing arn't overtightened when putting back together as I have seen this done many of times and the bearings don't last to long after this. Use a good quility high temperature bearing grease. Should get many years out of the bearings before changing them depending on how much use the trailer does.

one other tip

Thu, 2009-03-26 16:00

If you travel a fair distance (more than 100km) to the boat ramp it may pay to wait a short while before dropping the wheels into the water.  If you dont the bearings and grease etc has built up heat and when dropped into the water the grease suddenly cools and contracts.  This can possibly suck some water into the bearings which causes damage down the track.  Also gives you time to make sure the boat is right before dropping it into the water (such as bung plugs being put in etc)>!!

I usually do my bearings once a year before travelling a round trip of 1,600 2,000km to Smoky- Streaky bay as per my trip in 2 weeks given I don't want to be stuck on the side of the highway with a wheel 100m further up the road from my trailer.  As per Clewesy alway using good quality marine grease.  I also take the rollers off now an then and grease them as well as it makes launching and retrieving a lot easier when they roll with no resistence.

Cheers

Personally

I dont use petrol to clean out anywhere grease goes. Use a clean rag and be thorough. I just try and keep solvents away from the area as it may/can affect the new grease going in.

I do a grease change on mine 6 monthly (ie I've had my boat 8 months and have done the bearing once) LOL. Whether that is routine remains to be seen.......new trailer is slated for purchase around Sept this year.

Bearing Buddies

Does anyone else have bearing buddies that actually force themselves out of the hub when pumped full of grease? Two of mine always slowly creep out over any lengthy trip and need to be reseated.

i had one that wouldnt stay

i had one that wouldnt stay in, the trick i was told is , put the bearing buddy over the towball place a bit of wood over it and belt it with a hammer not too hard but, this spreads out the bit that goes into the hub and makes it a much tighter fit. mine hasnt fallen out again until i want it out
