Haines hunter 8m patriot
Submitted by DM on Tue, 2013-05-28 18:40
Hi all,
I just got my hands on a haines hunter patriot 8m with twin 2007 model honda 225's
Is there anyone on the board with experience with this model of boat and engines... I am interested to know a bit more about the props your running and the rpm/knots/fuel use your getting.
Thanks for your time
Rob

water
A mate of mine owns the other one mentioned in this thread and he was having trouble with water getting into the motors, a design fault they reckoned which he got sorted. one hell of a nice boat though.I can't remember exactly what the prob was.
This habit is getting expensive!

There was an issue with the Honda needing a service bulletin installed (56 if I remember correctly) once you have the fix installed it's game on they can play up quite a lot if you don't have it as water gets into the o2 sensor and can through out all sorts of red herrings when your trying to diagnose the problem.
Don't surpose anyone using a haines with similar setup has read this thread and would be kind enough to discuss there prop choice along with speed and fuel use figures?
I just brought one of the electronic digital speedometer guages they are ridiculously priced in Australia was quoted $1800 for the gauge and $600 for the harness... it's not exactly a complicated bit of kit (no the motors are not NMEA 2000 compatible) so hopefully I will be able to add a little info down the track.
Other then that have ordered the 4g simrad radar and autopilot... just waiting for them to turn up then it's time for some wet work ;)

Different boat but I have 225
Different boat but I have 225 on 7.5m glass boat and ended up with a 4 blade 14.5" solas prop after trying a few different ones. Top speed 38 knots cruise at 23knots using 38litres/hr. Hillarys to Thomson bay about 20litres.

yeah o2 sensor corroded if you get salt water back up the exhaust.easy fix they replace the ecu as the new sensor not compatible with old ecu.got mine sorted on warranty but wouldn't be cheap otherwise.the new oxygen sensor is s/s.Honda are awesome motors

I have added a simrad 4g
I have added a simrad 4g radar, and am in the process of installing an autopilot, all done bar the hydraulics...
I did end up buying the Digital gauge for the speedo out of the states... the price they quoted me here was $1800 for the speedo alone, $600 for a single wiring loom (I would need 2) and the costs kept racking up... got the speedo out of the states for around $700 and 2 wiring looms for around $200. Also managed to get 2 PGMFI cables from red dirt marine in broome for a good price Now I just need to figure out how to fit them and wire up the speedometer so I can get fuel readings also while keeping the analog tacho etc. If you have a spare moment might pick your brains on it Stevo!
The trailer is also getting a bit of an overhall with some heavier running gear being added just waiting for some steel at the moment!
Overall it's been a pretty interesting project... I am really looking forwards to having it finished and spending some time on the water though!
Cheers

With engines get a mechanic
With engines get a mechanic to check the blocks thoroughly.. A very good mate and fishing buddy has just had is Honda 225 block welleded up after a hairline crack caused by corrosion- Motor is just out of warranty so Honda didn't want to come to the party. Boat is 7 years old is serviced regularly and has been in numerous fishing magazines for the boat tests over the years.

I left the current props on
I left the current props on for the time being will have to have a look at them for pitch and diameter (I believe it's a 17 pitch though not sure untill I have a look).
I ended up installing a honda digital speedo (and kept the analog tacho's ;) ) so if anyone needs help installing those at some point I can give info!
My burn figures seem to sit on 1km/L to 1.1 km/L at 50km/h and 1km/l which is not to bad... (so 50-55L/hour) this seems pretty constant even when loaded up... Top speed for me is 76km/h with the current props and it gets onto the plane very quickly even when under considerable load.
Looking at the stat's associated with some of the earlier articles on patriot 800's set up with twin hondas I should be able to change props and get a further 10km/h out of the engines and a bit better economy at 50km/hour wich is the ultimate goal (it's too $$ to throw the hammers down). If anyone on the board knows someone with the patriot 800 and a set of honda 225's or 200's on the back it would be great to know what props they are using and a bit of info (top speed and economy)!

that is pretty remarkable
that is pretty remarkable fuel consumption, assuming it is both outboards.
My old Trailcraft did roughly 1nm/litre (about 2km/litre) with a F115 and my Cruisecraft with 2 x DF115 does roughly the same as yours, maybe slightly better but load dependant as we carry a fair weight on trips.
You'd be doing well to improve on that!

Yes it is good fuel economy
Yes it is good fuel economy at current setup... with the twin 225's I am using a similar (slightly higher) fuel burn to a patriot 680 running a single 225 I think thats probly due to the fact I am running a lot lower revs at around 30 knots... it's certainly not bad fuel use... I do have some rather outrageous trips planned however so if I can get better economy at cruise while still being able to take a load (an extra 600L of fuel)... that would be awesome ;)
It just seems to be very hard to find someone running an 8m patriot with twin hondas to post ;) if anyone knows someone running one and getting better figures with there prop let me know :)

Over east
Hop on the Ausfish or Fishnet sites. There are alot of Eastern States guys on there and you will find the Patriots are alot more common in the east.
Great rig by the way. Very narrow (only 2.5m I believe) for the length which is why you get such good economy and performance. Only slightly jealous.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.
